Updated for Patch 3.23
Swords are almost always used as a tool to perform an Attack, so their DPS is crucial - it will be their single most essential stat in that case. The role of a weapon is to deal damage, but some of them offer various defensive additions like Resistance or Maximum Life, or Utility modifiers such as Accuracy or Life Leech, which can determine how useful you may find them. These stats, however, should be sourced from all the other gear pieces rather than the Weapon Slot, if possible.
A lot of Unique Swords are great for leveling, but only some of them remain good in an end-game build. Starforge, Echoforge, Voidforge, Rakiata's Dance, Dreamfeather, Ephemeral Edge, or Paradoxica have simply very high damage, comparable to that, if not higher than some of the most expensive Rare Swords. Weapons such as Iron Mass, Cospri's Malice, or Severed in Sleep are well-recognized for their utility rather than damage and remain very popular among Minion or CoC Spell-based builds.
This list of all the Unique Swords we've put together should prompt you to explore their potential or explain how they work and why some builds use them. Just keep in mind that a Rare Weapon may outperform some of these Uniques.
One Hand Swords | |
Oni-Goroshi - An exceptionally good Sword for leveling. It drops only from Uber Hillock in the starting area and grows stronger the higher your character level is. We recommend using it with Added Fire Damage Support and Herald of Ash to Ignite and get the powerful "Her Embrace" buff which increases your DPS, grants immunity to Stuns, and some elemental Ailments. It requires good Life Recovery or Life Leech with capped Fire Resistance to sustain the self-inflicted Fire Damage over Time. It's one of the most prized Weapons in the game, despite being good only during the campaign and early maps. Better and cheaper Swords will be available later.
Required Level: 1 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Redbeak - Most players can't afford Oni-Goroshi so that's the weapon they choose after killing Hillock, if they bought a leveling gear that is. It has increased Physical Damage, added Damage, increased Attack Speed, Maximum Life, and Life on Kill - all of it makes it a decent weapon for the first Act.
Required Level: 1 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Princess - It's the Sword to use after Redbeak while leveling. It has higher stats and DPS with some extra added Cold Damage that's based on Physical Damage.
Required Level: 10 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Tempestuous Steel - The next weapon you want to use after The Princess during leveling, but only for a fully Converted to Elemental Damage Physical Attack like Glacial Hammer, Molten Strike with Fire Mastery for Damage Conversion, or anything else with Hrimsorrow Gloves. You also don't need Accuracy with it as Hits cannot be Evaded. It has low damage, but the Elemental Penetration and extra Damage make up for it.
Required Level: 20 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Replica Tempestuous Steel - This Replica version is worse than the original in almost any case unless you have an unusually high Accuracy Rating to mitigate its downside. It grants 100% increased Crit Chance which is significant, but the base Crit Chance of a weapon is only 5%, so it's bad overall. Specializing in Critical Strikes at level 20 is a bad idea anyway.
Required Level: 20 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Lakishu's Blade - It's another leveling weapon. The only important thing here is the base DPS which is around 100, which is great for level 28.
Required Level: 28 +190 to Accuracy Rating |
The Goddess Scorned - A leveling weapon that you may want to use instead of Lakishu's Blade in a case where you can sacrifice the off-hand slot. It has a higher DPS, good Crit modifiers, tons of Fire Resistance, and Fire Conversion. It's what we recommend for a Molten Strike build to take advantage of Flammability Curse and Combustion Support to deal more Fire Damage.
Required Level: 28 +190 to Accuracy Rating |
Ephemeral Edge - It has very low base Damage that is mainly sourced from your ES. Low-level characters have little to no Energy Shield, so to make this weapon any good use Discipline Aura, wear the Ghostwrithe Body Armour that Converts half of your Life into ES, and put Volatility Support in your Attack setup to gain 30% more Maximum Damage. It's a trick that works early, but a proper build that specializes in it is the Blade Trap Trickster.
Required Level: 32 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Innsbury Edge - At level 48 you can start wearing Rare Weapons with around 200 DPS, but this one is probably cheaper at the league start. It Converts 25% of your Physical Damage to Chaos which may be bad for a Physical build with Brutality Support or even an Elemental Damage one, but it has a relatively high DPS and it is still something that should dictate your weapon choices early on. It's great in low-level Poison or Chaos Damage builds with skills like Viper Strike.
Required Level: 47 +330 to Accuracy Rating |
Replica Innsbury Edge - If you have high Chaos Resistance, which is unlikely for a leveling character, get this Sword instead of the original. It shifts a portion of incoming Physical Damage to be taken as Chaos. The weapon has a very lower Attack Speed, but the ability to inflict Withered on Hit improves your Damage significantly so it balances out. Use if you can Convert the remaining 50% of Damage to Chaos, or if you play a Poison build. Don't use it if you can apply Withered with means such as Withering Touch Support or Nature's Reprisal.
Required Level: 47 +330 to Accuracy Rating |
Nametaker - With enough Critical Strike Multiplier you may eventually outclass other weapons in terms of damage, but the DPS of Nametaker is so low that is unlikely at best. The Enemy Power works as it does with Warcries, resulting in 20 Power during one-on-one boss fights. That's +200% to Critical Strike Multiplier and a lot of instant Life Leech. You could also get a Rare weapon with ten times more Damage, so it's really hard to justify its existence even as a leveling tool.
Required Level: 50 +350 to Accuracy Rating |
Prismatic Eclipse - It has low base stats that can be improved with Red and Green Sockets. With such, it has mediocre stats still, but enough for level 53. Due to the Attack Speed bonus being global, and not applying only to this weapon, it's also used in builds that Attack with an off-hand, like this Shield Crush Trickster.
Required Level: 53 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Fate of the Vaal - It works with any Skill that has Trinity Support linked to it, but it's nothing more than a leveling weapon. At level 56 it's great, however, in a proper build you will most likely go for a Voidforge or Rare Experimened Spiritblade.
Required Level: 56 +400 to Accuracy Rating |
Story of the Vaal - It's very similar to Fate of the Vaal. Good low-level weapon for a Trinity build. The difference is, instead of increasing damage, it increases the effects of Shock, Chill, and Ignite caused by it. The Ignite one is especially interesting, it grants tons of Burning Damage. There are almost no Ignite builds that use Swords, but if you happen to play one consider this weapon, it can be very good.
Required Level: 56 +400 to Accuracy Rating |
Ichimonji - It's another great leveling weapon. With its good DPS, increased Reservation Efficiency, and Buff Effect it's especially great on a build with Onslaught, Heralds, Auras (not Pride), Blood Rage, Ancestral Totems, Warcries, Guard Skills, Berserk, Fortify, Golems, Combat Rush, and other Buffs that all Attack builds probably use. Heavily recommended.
Required Level: 58 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Scaeva - It's not a good weapon. It affects global stats in a manner very similar to the Prismatic Eclipse. Most players won't find it useful, the stats it grants are insignificant and the weapon has low DPS. Ichimonji is still better if you're leveling up.
Required Level: 60 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Iron Mass - Used only in very specific Iron Mass builds. Not good anywhere else.
Required Level: 60 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Hyaon's Fury - It adds a lot of Lightning Damage to Attacks which is then increased alongside the number of your Frenzy Charges. A good Rare Weapon should be better for any build we can think of here. Use it only in an underdeveloped Lightning Damage Attack build with Frenzy Charges. Lightning Strike Raider may be good here, but it makes you take increased Damage which is bad obviously.
Required Level: 62 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Rippling Thoughts - A sword that occasionally summons Harbinger that grants you Arcane Surge. It has very low damage but can cast a Lightning Cascade Spell no faster than every 0.25 seconds. All of these virtues may suit a Spell Caster or CoC build rather than an Attack-based one. You can try it out in your Lightning Spell build, but there are far better options for these. We see no use for it.
Required Level: 62 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Surging Thoughts - It's an upgraded version of The Rippling Thoughts - the Harbinger not only grants you the Arcane Surge but also Chance to Shock and Lightning Penetration. It's still not a good item.
Required Level: 62 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Saviour - Saviour has mediocre DPS, but due to its unique Reflection Skill it is being used in some builds. It summons up to two Mirage copies of the weapon that uses your Skill, albeit with 50% less damage. To conjure them, Strike an enemy Critically with this Sword. It's a very similar thing to the Mirage Archer. This Sword is popular in Splitting Steel Champion build where it's held in an off-hand slot, as it doesn't consume its own Steel Shards. It's great in any Crit-based Impale Dual Sword build.
Required Level: 62 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Rebuke of the Vaal - The highest DPS Unique sword in the game. It's even nearly impossible to create Rare Swords with higher DPS. The downside is, that the damage is all over the place - it deals all five types of damage in the form of added damage. Typically, you want to focus on only specific types of damage. This Sword can be used in builds with Damaging Conflux, such as "all damage can Ignite" or "all damage can Poison" as the type of damage doesn't matter in such cases You could also convert all the Elemental Damage here with Original Sin and create a Poison build, but then again, a Rare Weapon with DoT or Poison mods will certainly be better there. It's a relatively good weapon for its price that you can use in some Mixed Elemental Damage builds such as this Melee Elemental Hit Champion.
Required Level: 64 +460 to Accuracy Rating |
Varunastra - Counts as any 1H Melee Weapon, be it a Claw, Mace, Dagger, and so on. Because of that you can pick a lot more passives from the Skill Tree and Cluster Jewels, and use any Melee Skill with it. It can also be used with Rigwald's Command or Rigwald's Savagery and Cleave of Rage Skill, the latter being especially popular as you can dump all your points into Axe Damage. Only in such circumstances, does the weapon have any use.
Required Level: 64 +460 to Accuracy Rating |
Beltimber Blade - It's used in Projectile builds, ones that will benefit from Far Shot, and for that, you need to aim for enemies far from you. Strike Skills like Frost Blades or Lightning Strike are bad choices as the Projectile usually doesn't travel far. The best Attack to use with it is Splitting Steel. Beltimber Blade has low DPS so it's usually paired with a more powerful Sword, like Dreamfeather.
Required Level: 66 +475 to Accuracy Rating |
Dreamfeather - It scales up its Damage with Evasion Rating, which is why it's good only on Evasion-stacking characters. Dreamfeather is often paired with Beltimber Blade in Splitting Steel builds where it grants damage.
Required Level: 66 +475 to Accuracy Rating |
Replica Dreamfeather - The Replica version of Dreamfeather lets you translate your Armour into damage. You can get tons of it from Iron Reflexes Keystones and Auras such as Grace and Determination. Because the bulk of Armour and Evasion is sourced from Auras, not gear, such builds tend to use Smite Skill which also derives its power from increased Aura Effect. We have implemented it in the Armour Stacking Smiter Scion.
Required Level: 66 +475 to Accuracy Rating |
Grelwood Shank - Point Blank makes you deal more damage to close targets. Projectiles that certainly won't travel far can be found on Molten Strike Skill, which is why we've used it in our Molten Strike Juggernaut, where we also benefit from Accuracy, Iron Reflexes, and increased Armour, as most Juggernauts do.
Required Level: 66 +475 to Accuracy Rating |
Ahn's Might - It has low damage but provides you with Accuracy or Crit Multiplier. Both, if you have a maximum of 0 Frenzy Charges. Builds that need Accuracy usually go for Replica Last Resort. Builds that need Critical Strike Multiplier will most likely go for a regular Rare Weapon with high damage, or a Nametaker if it's of particular importance. We see no use for this weapon.
Required Level: 68 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Razor of the Seventh Sun - It's not a good weapon, as is the idea of an Ignite Sword Melee Attack build. The modifiers to increased Burning and Physical Melee Damage are just not that impressive.
Required Level: 68 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Rigwald's Command - It's supposed to be a weapon for dual-wield Melee Bleed builds, yet it's currently a severely underpowered gimmick. Use it alongside an Axe such as Rigwald's Savagery and a lot of Maximum Rage if you want to explore its full potential.
Required Level: 68 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Severed in Sleep - Great for Poisonous Minions as it's where you will benefit from the Envy Aura and Withered on Hit for Minions. The weapon is very popular in Poison Summon Raging Spirits Necromancer, but you can use it in any build with a similar premise.
Required Level: 69 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
United in Dream - It's an "upgraded" version of Severed in Sleep. Upgrading it requires one Blessing of Chayula, which can be expensive. Instead of Crit Multiplier for Minions, it recovers their Life on Killing a Poisoned enemy. It's not needed as Raging Spirits are expendable and you reach the limit of how many of them you can summon at once quite quickly anyway.
Required Level: 69 40% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Thrusting One Hand Swords
The Goddess Bound - From level 7 until Act 3 or 4, it's a perfectly good weapon - it has high DPS. You can use it in any Attack build.
Required Level: 7 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Aurumvorax - It provides you with tons of Elemental Resistances which are important at every stage of the game. Use it in the early game to be much more durable.
Required Level: 17 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Fidelitas' Spike - It improves your Herald of Thunder which then adds more Damage to your Spells and Attacks. It's still not a lot of damage, especially later in the game. The DPS of a weapon is not very high either.
Required Level: 22 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Ewar's Mirage - It may only be somewhat good for a Spectral Shield Throw build. It will cause your Projectiles to Chain (which already Chain 3 times by default) for a better clear speed.
Required Level: 26 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Daresso's Passion - It's bad. You may think of using it on a low-level Frost Blades build to gain Frenzy Charges on Kill, and to get the damage bonus while you have no Frenzy Charges, which may occur during boss fights while you cannot gain Frenzy Charges on Kill.
Required Level: 43 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Paradoxica - One of the best weapons in the game that can be used in most eligible builds. It deals double damage, which is tied to the modifiers you've Unveiled, and due to the low base damage of this weapon, you certainly want to Unveil increased Physical Damage. Attack Speed is desirable as a Suffix. We've used it in our Frost Blades Berserker.
Required Level: 66 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Preplica Paradoxica - The replica version doesn't deal double damage but lets you Unveil 3 Suffixes and 3 Prefixes, not just one of each. Even with the best mods, it cannot reach the damage levels of regular Paradoxice, so it's worse. A Rare weapon of similar price will most likely be better as well.
Required Level: 66 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Cospri's Malice - One of the most popular weapons for Cyclone CoC builds. It's where you use this weapon to Trigger socketed Spells on Melee Critical Strike. Cyclone hits rapidly, is Melee, and lets you move around - that's why it's often used in such builds. You can socket here your Utility Skills. We've used it in Cospri's CoC Ice Nova/Glacial Cascade Assassin and Cospri's CoC Ice Spear Occultist builds.
Required Level: 68 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Two Hand Swords | |||
Shiversting - Great leveling weapon, but there's nothing unique about it, other than being uniquely good at level 14. It will resolve your Mana issues with its Mana Leech.
Required Level: 14 60% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Edge of Madness - The high Chaos Damage can be useful in low-level Poison builds, but these rarely use 2-hand Swords. It has no purpose in the current meta as Echoforge is much better in any case.
Required Level: 22 60% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Queen's Decree - Don't use it. A Wand with global Minon modifiers to Damage and Skill Gem Level is better and lets you wear a Shield.
Required Level: 27 +185 to Accuracy Rating |
Rigwald's Charge - Good for any low-level Attack build. It's very basic but has relatively high DPS.
Required Level: 44 +305 to Accuracy Rating |
Rakiata's Dance - One of the very few unique 2-hand Swords that are good in a proper end-game build. It has very high base Elemental Damage and treats enemies' Resistances as inverted, meaning you don't need to lower them with Curses, Exposures, or Scorch. It's a big deal, as usually, monsters have high Elemental Resistance - especially Bosses with various Map Modifiers. We have used it in our Trinity Molten Strike Champion.
Required Level: 48 60% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Terminus Est - This one's good in a rudimentary Flicker Strike build, but it can be of course used by any low-level Sword-wielding Crit Attack character. It has the damage and a way to generate Frenzy Charges which is enough for a low-level character. Replace it later with Oro's Sacrifice if you don't mind the lack of Physical Damage.
Required Level: 51 +360 to Accuracy Rating |
Hiltless - We find no use for it - other Swords don't deal damage to your character while presenting themselves with similar DPS. The self-inflicted Damage cannot be Blocked or used to trigger on-hit effects like Life gain on Hit.
Required Level: 59 60% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
The Dancing Dervish - It's used pretty much only in Hollow Palm Cyclone builds. The weapon detaches from your hands upon entering Rampage to spin on its own, which would be bad if not for the fact that you don't want to wear any weapon while using Hollow Palm anyway.
Required Level: 59 60% increased Global Accuracy Rating |
Kondo's Pride - Good in Critical Strike Melee Bleed builds, meaning completely useless. As of 3.23, it's an extremely underperforming gimmick.
Required Level: 61 +25% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier |
Doomsower - It doesn't have high damage, and even the circumstance in which all the sockets are Red and grants you the Vaal Pact with up to 30% of base Physical Damage as Fire Damage, which is less than the Awakened Added Fire Damage Support Gem, doesn't make up for it. It requires level 65, while all the best Swords in the game have only a slightly higher level requirement, so it's not even good for leveling.
Required Level: 65 +50 to Strength and Dexterity |
Echoforge - It's a very powerful Sword with a lot of Chaos Damage, making it excellent in Poison Damage builds, such as this Poison Ancestral Protector Pathfinder. The Maximum Life, Shock, and AoE are also significant upgrades. Echoforge can of course be used to deal on-hit damage, but it has to compete with Voidforge and Starforge which most players prefer. Chaos Damage and Sword passives are far from each other on the Passive Skill tree.
Required Level: 67 30% increased Chaos Damage |
Oro's Sacrifice - It's the best for a Flicker Strike player before being able to afford a better Rare or Unique Sword. It deals only Fire Damage, has a 20% Chance to Ignite, and creates a Frenzy Charge if you Ignite, which you will also do on Critical Strike. The base damage is high, and the Culling Strike will undoubtedly help you fight bosses.
Required Level: 67 30% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills |
Replica Oro's Sacrifice - It's not as good as the original in terms of damage, and instead of Ignite, it has the chance to Freeze with Endurance Charge on Freezing. It also deals Cold Damage, not Fire. Using the regular Oro's Sacrifice will yield better results in most cases, but this one's still good with Herald of Ice or Heatshiver to benefit from Freezing.
Required Level: 67 30% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills |
Starforge - Starforge is one of the best weapons for a purely Physical Attack build, like this Reave Slayer. It has high DPS, Maximum Life, large AoE, and can Shock with Physical Damage.
Required Level: 67 30% increased Global Physical Damage |
Voidforge - An extremely powerful Sword with high Elemental Damage of all three types. The damage output is more or less random, creating a perfect opportunity for some kind of Trinity Critical Strike build with Assassin's Mark for a Curse. It also grants Maximum Life and Area of Effect, but makes you unable to deal Physical or Chaos Damage, so be sure to convert the Physical Damage present here too. We have used it in our Voidforge Bladestorm, Charged Dash Raider, or Chains of Command Animated Guardian Necromancer,
Required Level: 67 30% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills |
