Exalted Orb - general information

Exalted Orb is the most popular, and you could say iconic Orb in the Path of Exile. Its main function is to add an extra property on a Rare Item (up to 6 on most gear pieces, and up to 4 on Jewels) but with all the new, more deterministic, methods of crafting, you don't use them for that purpose that often. Exalted Orbs were required for the most popular crafting recipes, but some of them were transferred to Divine Orbs just recently. Until then, it was the primary Currency in the game, which was replaced by Divine Orbs in this process. While Exalted Orbs are still popular, their usage has dropped drastically in recent times. They are currently worth around 15 Chaos Orbs, and while it may not seem like much, they are far from being common when it comes to finding them in the game. By the time you reach level 90 during casual gameplay, you will most likely find between 1 and 4 Exalted Orbs, and this should give you a general idea of how rare they are. Even though you can theoretically find them on lower levels and during the campaign (Exalted Orb has a drop level set at 35), the majority of players struggle to see at least one of these. 

Acquisition - Exalted Orbs have the same chance of dropping from regular content as Divine Orbs. There are however some additional ways to get them, most notably from various Divination Cards, and by collecting Exalted Shards from Harbingers, or vendor recipes. A "full set" of rare influenced items with the same type of influence can be exchanged for two Exalted Shards. A full set consists of one of each item capable of fitting in your inventory slot. Helmet, Body Armour, Gloves, Boots, Belt, Amulet, two Rings, and Weapon and/or off-hand. It can be a two-handed weapon, two one-handed weapons, two shields, or a shield with a one-handed weapon. If these items are additionally unidentified, you can vendor them for four Exalted Shards instead of two. Exalted Orbs have a massively increased chance of dropping from monsters influenced by a very rare, specific blue Eldritch Altar, but it's rather foolish to count on it to farm them reliably.

Functionality - Exalted Orbs add a random affix modifier to a rare item. If the Item already has three Suffixes it will always be a Prefix and vice versa, as no item can have more than three Suffixes of Prefixes. You can use it to your advantage on some specific items to craft a modifier that will cap the limit on the one type of explicit modifier, and then use the Exalted Orb, reducing the number of possible outcomes. The Jewels are an exception as they can only have up to two of each explicit modifier, and you cannot use Crafting Bench on them, but if you have an already good Jewel feel free to add an extra mod this way, and hope for the best as you can't really upgrade it any other way, and it probably won't ruin it either. If you have an item with five Explicit modifiers already, it's usually more efficient to just craft the modifier you desire. Exalted Orbs are also used to craft some of the best and most unique mods on a Crafting Bench.

In trade - Exalted Orbs are rarely used in trade. It is much more common to use Chaos Orbs or Divine Orbs. Due to their limited functionality, but at the same time extraordinary rarity, their value is always higher than that of Chaos Orb, but lower than that of Divine Orb, which most players prefer using. Nonetheless, it is still one of the most utilized and stable currency items in the game which will be used by most players at some point.
