Chaos Orb - general information

Chaos Orb is one of the most popular Orbs in PoE, which is commonly used to Buy and Sell mid-tier equipment and miscellaneous items. Chaos Orbs can be generally used to reroll properties on uncorrupted Rares, making it an Orb you will be consuming on a daily basis when you reach the Mapping phase. And the higher your level, the more often you will decide to do it since getting proper and more suitable affixes on your Maps can be very rewarding. It's also a very fun Orb to gamble with - mainly when it comes to rerolling properties on Jewels, Abyssal Jewels, Rings or Amulets, where you can hit a jackpot by getting just a few of powerful high Tier affixes. All this makes Chaos Orb one of the most commonly used Orb in Path of Exile, as regardless of your character level, or activity in the game; whether you are into Crafting or Mapping (or both), you will most likely use a lot of them every day.

Acquisition - Chaos Orbs are quite easy to obtain. Even though they are quite rare, you will be able to find them on most levels including a big part of the campaign. Besides occurring as a natural drop from all kinds of monsters and chests, they can be traded for using vendor recipes. To do so it is required to have a "full set" of gear pieces - one of each item capable of fitting in your inventory slot. Helmet, Body Armour, Gloves, Boots, Belt, Amulet, two Rings, and Weapon and/or off-hand. It can be a two-handed weapon, two one-handed weapons, two shields, or a shield with a one-handed weapon. It's important that all of these have an item level of 60 to 74. Such a set can be traded for one Chaos Orb at any vendor. If the items are all unidentified or of 20% quality, their worth is increased to two Chaos Orbs. If the items are both unidentified and of 20% quality, you can trade them for three Chaos Orbs. Another way of reliably getting Chaos Orbs is from red Eldritch Altars, which can massively increase the chance of getting them from monsters or bosses on a map. They are also rewarded for a lot of various Divination Cards that (among others) include popular cards like Rain of Chaos, Three Faces in the Dark, Chaotic Disposition, and The Wrath.

Functionality - Its function is to reforge a rare item with a new set of random affixes - 3 to 6 of them (up to 3 Suffixes and 3 Prefixes). Jewels are an exception as they can only have up to 4 mods (2 Suffixes and Prefixes), but their pool of possible modifiers is much larger so it's equally hard to get the right ones. It's a risky way to craft items as it's completely non-deterministic. You have very little control over the results, but at the same time, doing it is very cheap. Essence-crafting or Fossil-crafting are much better options for this purpose. Chaos Orbs are also used to craft some of the best modifiers on a Crafting Bech.

Chaos Orb can also have another very interesting use, which comes in handy every day for most players. It's the Orb that is the most convenient to be traded for other Minor Orbs. Simply because Divine Orb is too valuable, and not many players need thousands of Chromatic or Jeweller's Orbs, so spending anything above Chaos Orb may be a waste (at least in the short run) or you simply can be unable to afford such an exchange in the first place. Most players who are into exchanging Currencies will accept Chaos Orbs in those trades without any exceptions so you shouldn't have any issues getting all the other lower-tier Orbs that you currently need. It's always good to have some Chaos Orbs lying around as you never know when you will need them (and that's most likely all the time anyway. 

In trade - They also function as the most basic currency where the cheapest items on the market cost no less than 1 Chaos Orb, or 1c as it's often referred to in-game. Their value depends on supply and demand, both of which remain quite steady through the duration of the league. Another metric to discern their value is by comparing it to Divine Orb - the second most popular currency item that's worth around 200c. Even one Chaos Orb is often enough to buy a passable rare item with average stats that checks all the boxes for a build to function. That's what we recommend doing instead of using them on items. Buying is almost always cheaper and easier than crafting items yourself, especially with these orbs. Trading your loot for Chaos Orbs is actually the biggest revenue source for most players.
