Updated for Patch 3.23
Maces (not to be confused with Sceptres) are Melee weapons associated with Strength and their Implicit mods are often tied to Stun Threshold or Stun Duration. It's a niche and insignificant gimmick that not a lot of players are interested in. Maces' DPS is high, but not as high as that of Axes. Maces also have to compete with Sceprtes, Warstaves, and Swords, which are often great in a lot of similar builds. This weapon type is often used only when necessary, with Skills that require such a weapon, or in a build that values Stun Duration or reduced Stun Threshold.
As is the case in most Attack builds, the DPS of a weapon is very important, and when looking at Rare two-hand Maces, you're aiming to reach over 1k of mixed or Physical DPS. One-handed Maces could get around half of that. Unique weapons rarely even approach this upper limit, most of them offer much lower damage. Unique Maces may be useful in some builds due to their relatively good damage for their price - Frostbreath or Marohi Erqi are good examples of that. Mjölner and Nebuloch are build-defining items on account of their potent effects. Not a lot of other Maces can be considered great, but the list we've put together should prompt you to explore the potential of all of these weapons or explain how they work and why some builds use them.
One Hand Maces | |
Gorebreaker - Even with reduced Attack Speed it has quite good DPS due to the high Hit Damage. For a level 10 character at least. You may use it to inflict a big Bleeding instance to boost your DPS early on. Combine it with Chance to Bleed Support in some kind of Physical Melee Attack build.
Required Level: 10 10% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Brightbeak - Its Attack Speed is remarkable, but there's not much else on it. It can be used while dual-wielding with Dual Strike of Ambidexterity - this Attack uses your off-hand Attack Speed. It's also good for leveling due to the extra Resistances.
Required Level: 20 10% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Lavianga's Wisdom - It's a mediocre leveling weapon. Its damage is similar to that of the Brightbeak, but the reduction in Movement Speed is highly undesirable. It has no particularly unique qualities.
Required Level: 20 10% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Flesh-Eater - A fine leveling weapon for when you lack Life Leech - it's a great way to Recover Life during fights, but can as easily be gained from the Passive Skill Tree too. It has no use in any proper build.
Required Level: 32 10% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Clayshaper - Most Golem builds can summon around 5 or 6 Golems, so this weapon improves the overall damage there significantly. Especially if they're dealing Physical Damage, as is the case in Carrion Golem or even Stone Golem builds. It is good, but the majority of such builds tend to use a regular "Rare Minion Convoking Wand" with a Shield. Clayshaper is still a good budget-friendly offensive option if dual-wielding.
Required Level: 41 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Frostbreath - Its damage is somewhat good, given the enemy you're targeting is Chilled. Chilling is guaranteed in any Cold Damage build that does not use Elemental Focus or The Interrogation. The added damage is twice as efficient with this weapon, and the best way to do so is with Trauma Stacks from Trauma Support. We recommend it for a Glacial Hammer Slayer build - it's quite good there as a budget option.
Required Level: 50 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Replica Frostbreath - Its damage is low, even if doubled, and the most obvious way to add more Chaos Damage into an Attack build is with the Replica Alberon's Warpath and stacking Strength. It's the go-to weapon for such builds. We have used it in a Chaos Cyclone Occultist build.
Required Level: 50 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Cameria's Avarice - It has low damage accompanied by a unique Icicle Burst on Hit a Frozen enemy. The Icicle Burst has a 0.5-second Cooldown and can be supported with Gems. It's a skill similar to Frost Blades, but much worse, so no one uses it. Even as a supplementary damage source, its damage and trigger frequency are simply too low.
Required Level: 60 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Cameria's Maul - It's an inferior version of Cameria's Avarice. You can upgrade it using a vendor recipe. It has no use.
Required Level: 60 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Mjölner - A must-have for a lot of CoC Cyclone builds. It lets you trigger socketed Lightning Spells on Hit up to 4 times a second. It has only 3 sockets so these are often utility or low-damage Spells, but you can combine it with The Squire Shield to create a second full-fledged Trigger setup. Its Intelligence and Strength Requirement is high, so it's often used by Inquisitors which is a class that specializes in Critical Strikes and Elemental Damage. We have used it in a popular Manabond Mjölner Hierophant build.
Required Level: 60 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Callinellus Malleus - Pointless. Its damage is low, and its gimmick - unrewarding and underwhelming. We see no use for it.
Required Level: 66 15% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
|
Nebuloch - It can be used by Fire Conversion Boneshatter Endurance Charge stacking Juggernauts. It's the class that can easily withstand the self-inflicted Fire DoT and has additional synergies with Endurance Charges. In return, it grants tons of flat Armour, reduces Elemental Hit Damage Taken, improves Chaos Resistance, and adds some Physical Damage per Endurance Charge with a lot of extra Fire Damage on top of that.
Required Level: 68 10% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold |
Two Hand Maces | |
Hrimnor's Hymn - It's a fine leveling weapon, it has high DPS and Life Leech that will help you during the boss fights in the first and second acts.
Required Level: 17 45% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Quecholli - It's also a somewhat good leveling weapon, especially if your single-target damage is already high. It causes enemies to explode in a fashion similar to Infernal Blow.
Required Level: 22 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Geofri's Baptism - Its DPS is good for a level 27, but use it only if you don't have any Critical Strike mods, as it disables your Crit Chance. It quickly becomes outclassed by other weapons as you level up.
Required Level: 27 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Chober Chaber - It's not good, Minion builds tend to use Maata's Teaching or Rare Convoking Wands. This one may be acceptable if your character also needs a quite good weapon, which is the case in Domination Blow/Herald of Purity builds. Replace it later with something better.
Required Level: 40 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Trypanon - Its use is only with Sandstom Visage to always have 100% Crit Chance for Spells. Still, losing a 2-h weapon slot only to secure it is a bad deal in almost any case, but seen in some Hexbalst builds, as its base Crit Chance is very low.
Required Level: 40 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Replica Trypanon - It can be used in the same Hexbalst build as the regular Trypanon, the downside of both of these does not matter in s Spell build.
Required Level: 40 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Jorrhast's Blacksteel - Don't use it, Animating Weapon on Kill is unreliable during boss fights, it's better to cast it manually. Even as a secondary damage source, it is better to just get a regular weapon that most Minion builds would prefer.
Required Level: 44 45% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Voidhome - Its stats are good for a weapon you can use that early, but it also reduces your Experience gained, making it bad for leveling. It has no use unless you swap it for boss fights on your Boneshatter build - its Attack Speed is remarkably high.
Required Level: 54 30% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Marohi Erqi - Its Damage is extremely high, but the low Attack Speed evens it out, making the DPS comparable to that of a medium/good Rare weapon. It's especially great in builds that prioritize Hit Damage over Attack Speed, so most Slam builds. The reduction in Accuracy is not that punishing, and you can just go for the Resolute Technique Keystone to always Hit. It's also fine in a Spell build with Battlemage for added Damage to Spells. We have used it in a Chains of Command Animated Guardian Necromancer build - it's where your Minions will use this weapon's Damage (not DPS), improved with Rallying Cry.
Required Level: 57 45% increased Stun Duration on Enemies |
|
Brain Rattler - The DPS is very low here, but in turn, it applies a strong Shock, Penetrates 20% of Lightning Resistance (half that of an Awakened Lightning Penetration Support Gem), and slows down your enemies. It's still not enough to justify its low DPS. If you want to Shock, use Starforge, Echoforge, Voidforge, Yoke of Suffering, or Skitterbots. You can even use a separate setup with Overcharge Support just to apply a powerful Shock.
Required Level: 63 5% chance to deal Double Damage |
|
Tidebreaker - The DPS is low, but it comes with a built-in Support Gem, gants more Damage per Endurance Charge, and some Intelligence, which you often lack is the type of builds this weapon is used for. Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support grants more Damage, so it's not as bad on an Endurance-stacking Boneshatter. Still, a good Rare will most likely be significantly better.
Required Level: 65 10% increased Strength |
|
Kongor's Undying Rage - Pointless. Onslaught is very easy to get but judging by the underwhelming DPS of this weapon you may be misled to think it's much better than it is. Just get a Rare weapon with Resolute Technique and Silver Flask.
Required Level: 67 25% chance to double Stun Duration |
|
Replica Kongor's Undying Rage - This one Regenerates 20% of Maximum ES per second if you have dealt a Critical Strike in the past 4 seconds. Most builds that would use a Mace don't need ES Regeneration as they don't have a lot of ES to begin with. There are also other ways to Recover ES such as ES Leech, Supreme Decadence, Aegis Aurora, Divine Shield, Pious Path, Zealot's Oath, and the basic Recharge. It's bad.
Required Level: 67 25% chance to double Stun Duration |
