Skill Trees

The recommended leveling path for the Whirlwind Barbarian is straightforward, although the build becomes significantly stronger once you acquire a reliable high-damage weapon. During the early levels, Bash and Double Swing provide a simple and effective way to progress through Normal difficulty, while Leap offers excellent mobility and crowd control. As you unlock stronger skills, Frenzy can serve as an excellent leveling option, providing increased Attack Speed and Movement Speed while allowing you to comfortably clear monsters before transitioning into the full Whirlwind playstyle.

Once Whirlwind becomes available, it gradually takes over as your primary clearing skill, allowing you to spin through groups of enemies while dealing continuous physical damage. Continue investing in Whirlwind and its core synergies while upgrading your weapons whenever possible, as weapon damage has a tremendous impact on the build's overall performance. Battle Orders and Shout provide valuable Life and defensive bonuses, while War Cry can be used as a powerful utility skill for stunning dangerous enemies when additional crowd control is required.

As you progress through Nightmare and into Hell, focus on improving your weapon damage, Attack Rating, Life Leech, and resistances while working toward your final endgame setup. Once you acquire powerful weapons such as Grief, Death, or Breath of the Dying and combine them with high-end equipment like Fortitude or Enigma, Whirlwind reaches its full potential. At that point, the Barbarian can rapidly spin through dense monster packs, relying on massive physical damage, Battle Orders, and Life Leech to maintain both exceptional clear speed and survivability throughout endgame farming.

Gear

Grief is the undisputed Best-in-Slot main-hand weapon for the Whirlwind Barbarian, providing an enormous flat damage bonus that dramatically increases Whirlwind's physical damage and overall kill speed. Its combination of Enhanced Damage, Increased Attack Speed, Ignore Target's Defense, and Deadly Strike makes it one of the most powerful melee weapons in Diablo II Resurrected. A Phase Blade is generally the most convenient base thanks to its extremely fast weapon speed and complete immunity to durability loss, making it an excellent choice for a dual-wielding endgame setup. 

The off-hand weapon is more flexible and depends on your priorities. Breath of the Dying provides exceptional raw damage, Attack Rating, Life Leech, and impressive overall utility, making it one of the strongest choices for a high-end physical damage setup. Death offers enormous Enhanced Damage and Crushing Blow, making it particularly effective against bosses and high-Life targets. A second Grief is an excellent option for maximizing consistent physical damage and is often considered one of the strongest dual-wield configurations for general PvM. Beast is another powerful alternative when its Level 9 Fanaticism Aura is useful for your specific weapon combination, although it generally requires more careful weapon and IAS planning than the standard dual-Grief setup.

Fortitude is the preferred armor for a pure damage-oriented Whirlwind Barbarian, offering massive Enhanced Damage alongside Life, Resistances, and strong defensive bonuses. The enormous damage increase applies directly to the Barbarian's physical attacks, making Fortitude one of the most effective choices for maximizing Whirlwind's kill speed. Enigma remains the superior utility option for players who value Teleport, allowing instant repositioning, faster movement between farming areas, and improved control over Mercenary positioning. While Enigma sacrifices a significant amount of raw damage compared to Fortitude, its mobility can dramatically improve overall farming efficiency.

Arreat's Face remains the most balanced helmet for Whirlwind Barbarian, providing +2 Barbarian Skills, +2 Combat Skills, Faster Hit Recovery, Life Leech, Strength, Dexterity, and All Resistances. The combination of offensive and defensive bonuses makes it an excellent choice for virtually every endgame setup. Players pursuing maximum physical damage can instead consider a powerful Rare or Crafted Barbarian Helmet with +2 Barbarian Skills, Increased Attack Speed, Life, Resistances, or sockets, although an exceptional Rare is significantly more difficult to obtain and usually requires careful optimization of the rest of the equipment.

For gloves, Steelrend is one of the strongest options for maximizing raw physical damage thanks to its Enhanced Damage and Strength, making it particularly attractive for a pure damage setup. Laying of Hands is an outstanding alternative for general PvM farming, providing Increased Attack Speed and a massive bonus against Demons that makes it exceptionally effective in areas such as Chaos Sanctuary and against many of the game's most common high-value targets. The choice between Steelrend and Laying of Hands ultimately depends on whether you prioritize maximum theoretical physical damage or stronger performance against Demons.

Gore Rider is the preferred endgame footwear for most high-damage Whirlwind Barbarians, combining Crushing Blow, Deadly Strike, and Open Wounds to significantly improve performance against elites and bosses. Crushing Blow is particularly valuable against high-Life targets, while Deadly Strike further increases the effectiveness of the Barbarian's already powerful physical attacks. Players who require additional defensive stats can instead use well-rolled Rare Boots with Faster Run/Walk, Life, and multiple Resistances, although Gore Rider remains the strongest offensive choice.

Verdungo's Hearty Cord is the preferred belt for a defensive and balanced Whirlwind setup, providing substantial Vitality, Faster Hit Recovery, and up to 15% Physical Damage Reduction. These bonuses are particularly valuable when fighting directly inside dense monster packs and help compensate for the build's aggressive melee playstyle. Players looking to maximize offensive potential can consider String of Ears for additional Damage Reduction and Life Leech, while Arachnid Mesh is generally reserved for utility-focused setups that make use of Teleport and other non-Whirlwind skills rather than pure melee damage.

Highlord's Wrath is the preferred endgame amulet thanks to its Increased Attack Speed, +1 to All Skills, Lightning Resistance, and, most importantly, Deadly Strike that scales with Character Level. The combination of IAS and Deadly Strike makes it exceptionally effective for Whirlwind, while the additional Skill Level improves Battle Orders and other Barbarian utility skills. Players seeking a more defensive setup can consider Mara's Kaleidoscope for +2 Skills and substantial All Resistances, while a high-end Rare or Crafted Amulet with +2 Skills, Attack Rating, Life, Strength, or Resistances can provide valuable customization for specialized setups.

For rings, Raven Frost is generally considered mandatory for most PvM setups because Cannot Be Frozen is extremely valuable for maintaining reliable movement and positioning during Whirlwind. The Dexterity and Attack Rating further improve the Barbarian's offensive consistency. The second ring slot is flexible and can be filled with another Raven Frost, a Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band for +1 Skills and Life, or a well-rolled Rare Ring featuring Life Leech, Attack Rating, Strength, Dexterity, Life, and Resistances. Players who already have sufficient Attack Rating and survivability can prioritize Bul-Kathos for additional Life and Skill Levels, while a strong Rare Ring can provide the exact combination of defensive and offensive stats needed to optimize the rest of the build.

Charms

Charms for the Whirlwind Barbarian are primarily focused on maximizing physical damage, Attack Rating, Life, and the survivability required for sustained melee combat. Unlike caster builds that prioritize Skill Grand Charms for direct spell damage, Whirlwind Barbarian benefits most from a combination of offensive charms that improve weapon performance and defensive charms that help the Barbarian survive while fighting directly inside dense monster packs.

The Barbarian Hellfire Torch and Annihilus are mandatory, providing valuable Skill Levels, Attributes, and All Resistances that benefit every aspect of the build. The remaining inventory can be filled with War Cry Grand Charms with Life to increase Battle Orders and improve the Barbarian's overall utility, although these are primarily a defensive and utility-focused choice rather than a direct Whirlwind damage increase. For players focused purely on maximizing melee damage, Max Damage, Attack Rating, and Life Small Charms, commonly known as 3/20/20s, are among the strongest offensive options available.

Complete the remaining inventory with Small Charms featuring Maximum Damage, Attack Rating, and Life, while adding All Resistances or Faster Hit Recovery as needed to balance your equipment and reach important defensive thresholds. Attack Rating is particularly valuable for Whirlwind, as every missed attack represents lost damage and reduced Life and Mana Leech. High-end players can therefore prioritize 3/20/20 Small Charms for maximum physical damage and consistency, while players who need additional survivability can replace some offensive charms with Life/Resistance or Life/FHR Small Charms. You can also use Bone Break Sunder Charm to make dealing with Physical Immunities easier.

Mercenary

The recommended endgame setup is Act 2 Offensive (Might) Desert Guard Mercenary.
