The PitZerker Barbarian
Magic Finding Build

For Diablo 2 Resurrected

Build Overview

Thanks to the Find Item Skill, which can easily give you over a 50% chance of getting an extra item drop from defeated monsters, Barbarian is the best Class for dedicated Magic Finding builds (some might argue that Sorceress is better). While Find Item can be used by any Barb, the build that achieves the best results with it is, by far, the hero of this guide - PitZerker. This is because Berserk's high single-target damage is ideal for quickly dealing with Unique monsters and its synergy skill, Howl, makes skipping trash much easier.

The following build was designed to farm in The Pit (hence the name) on /Players 1 difficulty setting. To achieve optimal results with it, you will want to jump around with the Enigma, scatter trash monsters with Howl when needed, quickly defeat Uniques and Champions, and then use Find Item on them.

 Pros  Cons
Mathematically the Best Magic-Finding build in the game   Needs Enigma and multiple other expensive items to achieve its full potential
High Single-Target Damage   Single-Target-focused, not recommended for full-clearing runs
 Great Mobility
 Solid Utility

Skills

ATTRIBUTES
  1. Strength - All you want, in terms of Strength, is enough of it to equip everything you will want to use on your character.
  2. Dexterity - The amount of Dexterity you want is going to depend on your gear. You should aim for Maximum Block with this build and add enough Dexterity to achieve it.
  3. Vitality - You should put all your remaining points here - main stat.
  4. Energy - Adding points to Energy is an extreme waste - don't do it.
COMBAT SKILLS

This is where your main offensive skill (Berserk) comes from.

Skills:

  1. Bash [1/20] - Prerequisite. Attacks an enemy and knocks them back.
  2. Stun [1/20] - Prerequisite. Strike an enemy, temporarily stunning them. This might be useful in some situations but you can just rely on your Berserk to pull you through most of the time.
  3. Concentrate [1/20] - Prerequisite. Attacks an enemy and raises concentration, temporarily increasing Defense. Even with 1 hardpoint, Concentrate can provide a significant boost to your defenses which makes it a nice addition to your toolkit.
  4. Berserk [20/20] - A vicious all-out attack that temporarily reduces Barbarian's defenses to 0. Berserk deals high amounts of Magic Damage which makes it extremely powerful in any situation as Magic-immunes are extremely rare. You can rely on this skill to carry you through any level 85 zone in the game, just be aware that using it makes you more vulnerable for some time.
COMBAT MASTERIES

This Skill Tree contains some great passives that range from utility skills to weapon-specific boosts. The featured Combat Masteries setup is standard for most Barbarian Builds.

Skills:

  1. Sword/Axe/Mace Mastery {20/20] - Increases your Attack Rating, Critical Strike Chance, and Damage when using Swords/Axes/Maces. Max out the one that corresponds with your weapon.
  2. Increased Stamina [1/20] - Boosts your Stamina Recovery Rate and increases your maximum Stamina. Because of heavy diminishing returns, you shouldn't invest more than 1 point here.
  3. Iron Skin [1/20] - Increases your overall Defense. Level 1 Iron Skin gives you a 30% defense boost; spending more points on it is generally considered wasteful.
  4. Increased Speed [1/20] - Increases your Run/Walk Speed. Another 1-point-wonder.
  5. Natural Resistance [1/20] - A passive skill that increases your natural resistances to elemental and poison damage. Spending 1 point here is a good investment, especially if you have +Skills bonuses from gear.
WARCRIES

From here, we'll get some much-needed utility, Berserk Synergies, and a skill that will let you generate more loot (yay!).

Skills:

  1. Find Potion [1/20] - Prerequisite. Attempts to find a random potion in a monster's corpse.
  2. Howl [20/20] - Frightens nearby enemies, causing them to run away in fear. This is a very nice and extremely useful utility skill as it allows you to skip monster packs very easily. To make your Magic Finding ruins as efficient as possible, you want to focus solely on Uniques and Elites - Howl allows you to do just that by scattering trash mobs and letting you pass through more easily. Also, Howl synergizes with Berserk, so you'd want to max it out even if you weren't going to use it (use it. It's worth it).
  3. Shout [20/20] - An AoE Buff that improves the defense rating of you and your party. Having this active at all times will improve your survivability significantly. This is a very solid defensive skill and a Berserk synergy, so you should max this one out, but only after you max out all of our other recommendations.
  4. Find Item [10/20] - Attempts to find a random item in a monster's corpse. Elites and Uniques will always drop a single item and this skill gives you a 51% chance (at level 20) to get another drop! This skill is the main reason why PitZerker is the most efficient Magic Finding character in the entire game. You can't beat a skill that basically makes 2 PitZerker Pit Runs equal to 3 runs on any other character... The reason why we only recommend spending 10 points here is the fact that Find Item sufferers from heavy diminishing returns. If you have 10 soft points from gear, spending more than 10 hard points on it is simply a waste (points from 21 to 24 do nothing, basically, so you should aim to have this one at level 20 total).
  5. Battle Orders [1/20] - Increases the max Life, Mana, and Stamina of you and your party. A 1-point-wonder skill that's going to give you a nice stat boost every time you use it.
  6. Battle Command [1/20] - Increases all current skill levels for you and your party. You always get +1 to All Skills from this, as all subsequent levels only increase the duration. Don't waste any more points here - soft points from gear will be enough to boost the duration. Don't forget to refresh it.

Items

With this build, you should focus your gear around two things - extra Magic Find that is going to make farming much more efficient, and +Skills which are going to help with clear speeds and boost your FInd Item. Reaching 105% FCR Breakpoint is also recommended for Enigma. Moreover, never, under any circumstances, equip an item that adds Cold Damage as it's going to make you shatter your enemies, making it impossible to use Find Item on them - you don't want that. Faster Run/Walk and extra Stamina/Stamina Regen are also very useful to have as they will boost your overall mobility. Don't bother with Life/Mana Leeching effects as they simply won't work with Berserk's Magic Damage.

HELMETS

Harlequin Crest (Shako) - When you need extra skill levels on a Magic Finding build, Shako is an amazing choice. It not only gives you +2 to all Skills, but also a lot of Health, Mana, and a whopping 50% extra Magic Find. Moreover, it reduces incoming damage by 10%, which is nice.

Harlequin Crest

  • Defense: 98 to 141
  • Required Level: 62
  • Required Strength: 50
  • Durability: 20
    • +2 to All Skills
    • +1-148 to Life (+1.5 per Character Level)
    • +1-148 to Mana (+1.5 per Character Level)
    • Damage Reduced By 10%
    • 50% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
    • +2 to All Attributes

Immortal King's Will (Avenger Guard) - This is a very solid and relatively cheap Barbarian Magic Finding Helmet. If you decide to socket it with two Perfect Topazes or Ist Runes, you can get up to 90% total MF out of it, which is massive. Also, +2 to Warcries helps to boost your Find Item to level 20. Moreover, if you put on a pair of boots from this set, you'll get an extra 25% Magic Find.

Immortal King's Will

  • Defense: 160 to 175
  • Required Level: 47
  • Required Strength: 65
  • Durability: 55
    • +2 to Warcries (Barbarian Only)
    • +125 Defense
    • 37% Extra Gold from Monsters
    • [25-40]% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (varies)
    • +4 to Light Radius
    • Socketed (2)

WEAPONS

Grief (Runeword) - While Grief does not give you any MF, it more than makes up for it with the sheer offensive power it offers. It can almost singlehandedly take care of your Increased Attack Speed Breakpoint (if you use Goldwrap, you'll need at least 32% IAS from this one if you inscribe it in a Phase Blade). Moreover, it greatly increases your Damage and nullifies the enemy's defense.

Grief

You should use this in a Phase Blade

  • Damage:  Depends on base Weapon
  • Required Level: 59
  • Required Dexterity: Depends on base Weapon
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Weapon
  • Durability: Depends on base Weapon
  • Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral
    • 35% Chance To Cast Level 15 Venom On Striking
    • Damage +340-400 (varies)
    • +30-40% Increased Attack Speed (varies)
    • Ignore Target's Defense
    • -25% Target Defense
    • +(1.875 Per Character Level) 1.875-185.625% Damage To Demons (Based On Character Level)
    • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage
    • -20-25% To Enemy Poison Resist (varies)
    • 20% Deadly Strike
    • Prevent Monster Heal
    • +2 To Mana After Each Kill
    • +10-15 Life After Each Kill (varies)

Kingslayer (Runeword) - This is an interesting alternative to Grief. It offers an amazing boost to your damage output thanks to a plethora of very strong effects. You should socket it in a Phase Blade. Just remember that you'll need to find +10 Increased Attack speed somewhere, to get to Berserk's final breakpoint, if you decide to use this one.

Heart of the Oak

  • Damage: Depends on base Weapon
  • Required Level: 53
  • Required Dexterity: Depends on base Weapon
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Weapon
  • Durability: Depends on base Weapon
  • Mal + Um + Gul+ Fal
    • +30% Increased Attack Speed
    • +230-270% Enhanced Damage (varies)
    • -25% Target Defense
    • 20% Bonus To Attack Rating
    • 33% Chance Of Crushing Blow
    • 50% Chance Of Open Wounds
    • +3 To Vengeance
    • Prevent Monster Heal
    • +10 To Strength
    • 40% Extra Gold From Monsters
    • Repairs 1 Durability In 10 Seconds
SHIELDS/OFF-HAND

Rhyme (Runeword) - A solid shield that is going to help you achieve maximum block while also improving your Magic Finding capabilities a bit. Moreover, the bonus mana regen it provides comes in handy when you're spamming Enigma's Teleport. Also, it gives you the "Cannot be Frozen" which is great as using a Raven Frost is not ideal for this build. It's incredibly cheap to make, so you should inscribe it into the strongest shield you can find (we recommend the Pavise).

Rhyme

  • Defense: Depends on base Shield
  • Required Level: 29
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Shield
  • Durability: Depends on base Shield
  • Shael + Eth
    • +40% Faster Block Rate
    • 20% Increased Chance of Blocking
    • Regenerate Mana 15%
    • All Resistances +25
    • Cannot Be Frozen
    • 50% Extra Gold from Monsters
    • 25% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Splendor (Rune Word) - A nice and inexpensive Magic Finding Shield Runeword. This one is more offensively focused than Rhyme as it gives you +1 to All Skills but does not boost your chance of blocking. If you don't want max block but still want to use a shield for some extra defenses, this is the way to go.

Splendor

  • Defense: Depends on base Shield
  • Required Level: 37
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Shield
  • Durability: Depends on base Shield
  • Eth + Lum
    • +1 To All Skills
    • +10% Faster Cast Rate
    • +20% Faster Block Rate
    • +60-100% Enhanced Defense (varies)
    • +10 To Energy
    • Regenerate Mana 15%
    • 50% Extra Gold From Monsters
    • 20% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
    • +3 To Light Radius

A 6-Socketed Weapon - If you really want to go all-in, you can take a Weapon with 6 open sockets and put 6 Ist Runes into it. Doing so would result in a Weapon boasting 180% Magic Find, but nothing else. If you decide to go for it, equip it in your off-hand slot instead of a shield.

6 Ist Weapon

  • Damage:  Varies
  • Required Level: Varies
  • Required Dexterity: Varies
  • Required Strength: Varies
  • Durability: Varies
  • Ist + Ist + Ist + Ist + Ist + Ist
    • 180% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
WEAPON SWAP

2x Wizardspike (Bone Knife) - We recommend these as they are going to supplement the Enigma extremely well with their FCR, Mana, and Mana regen.

Wizardspike

  • Damage:  23 - 49
  • Required Level: 61
  • Required Dexterity: 75
  • Required Strength: 38
  • Durability: Indestruictable
    • Indestructible

    • Increase Maximum Mana 15%
    • +[2-198] to Mana (+2 per Character Level)
    • Regenerate Mana 15%
    • All Resistances +75

AMULETS

A Magic/Rare Amulet with + Magic Find Affixes - Magic Amulets can have up to 50% MF and Rares can roll up to 35%. If you can afford one of these, go for it. If not, get a nice offensive amulet or try to craft one yourself.

Rare Amulet Magic Amulet

  • In Magic Amulets, look for:
    • Magic Find
    • + to Warcries
    • Resistances
  • In Rare Amulets, look for:
    • Magic Find
    • + to Barbarian Skills
    • Resistances
    • Attributes

Highlord's Wrath - This powerful Amulet offers us a great combination of offensive stats which make it hard to pass up. Highlord's 20% Increased Attack Speed allows you to replace Goldwrap and Grief (if you get a weapon with at least 30% IAS) and still have enough IAS for Berserk.

Highlord's Wrath

  • Required Level: 65
    • +1 to All Skills
    • 20% Increased Attack Speed
    • + 0-25% Deadly Strike (+0.25 per Character Level)
    • Lightning Resist +25-35% (varies)
    • Adds 1-300 Lightning Damage
    • Attacker Takes Lightning Damage of 400-650 (varies)

ARMORS

Enigma (Runeword) - If you take Magic Finding with this build seriously, Enigma is the only choice. It will not only increase your MF stat by a lot, but it's also going to skyrocket your mobility. Without Enigma's Teleport, PitZerker is a mere shadow of itself.

Enigma

  • Defense: Depends on base Armor
  • Required Level: 65
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Armor
  • Durability: Depends on base Armor
  • Jah + Ith + Ber
    • +2 To All Skills
    • +45% Faster Run/Walk
    • +1 To Teleport
    • +750-775 Defense (varies)
    • +(0.75*Clvl) To Strength (Based On Character Level)
    • Increase Maximum Life 5%
    • Damage Reduced By 8%
    • +14 Life After Each Kill
    • 15% Damage Taken Goes To Mana
    • (1*Clvl)% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (Based On Character Level)

Wealth (Runeword) - If you really want to run this build on a budget, Wealth might be a decent option that will let you farm for an Enigma quicker. It's also nice if you like gambling as 300% extra gold is quite a lot.

Wealth

  • Defense: Depends on base Armor
  • Required Level: 43
  • Required Strength: Depends on base Armor
  • Durability: Depends on base Armor
  • Lem + Ko + Tir
    • +10 to Dexterity
    • +2 to Mana after each Kill
    • 300% Extra Gold from Monsters
    • 100% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

RINGS

Nagelring - This ring can give you up to 30% extra Magic Find, which is very solid for the slot. Moreover, it adds up to 75 Attack Rating which is very important for the build. If you feel like you don't need extra Skills from your rings, you should use two of these.

Nagelring

  • Required Level: 7
    • +[50-75] to Attack Rating (varies)
    • Magic Damage Taken Reduced by 3
    • Attacker Takes Damage of 3
    • [15-30]% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (varies)

A Magic Ring with MF Affixes - Rings like these can have up to 50% MF, which is Best in Slot. They are extremely rare, however, and their price is likely to scare you off even if you manage to find one for sale.

Magic Ring

  • In Magic Rings, look for:
    • Magic Find

The Stone of Jordan - If you feel like you need some extra skill levels or have mana-related problems, choosing this ring might be a good idea.

The Stone of Jordan

  • Required Level: 29
    • +1 to All Skills
    • Increase Maximum Mana by 25%
    • Adds 1-12 Lightning Damage
    • +20 to Mana

GLOVES

Chance Guards (Chain Gloves) - This is the first pair of gloves that comes to mind when we think about Magic Finding. Chance Guards offer up to 40% MF and a nice bonus to gold drop.

Chance Guards

  • Defense: 67-74
  • Required Level: 45
  • Required Strength: 58
  • Durability: 16
    • +20-30% Enhanced Defense (varies)
    • +15 Defense
    • +25 to Attack Rating
    • 25-40% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (varies)
    • 200% Extra Gold From Monsters
    • +2 to Light Radius

Magefist (Light Gauntlets) - Using Magefist over Chance Guards is going to lower your Magic Find by a bit but, in return, you'll get a nice boost to mana regen and +20 FCR, both of which are great bonuses for Enigma and its Teleport.

Magefist

Defense: 24 - 25
Required Strength: 45
Durability: 18
Required Level: 23
  • +20-30% Enhanced Defense (varies)
  • +10 Defense
  • +1 To Fire Skills
  • 20% Faster Cast Rate
  • Regenerate Mana 25%
  • Adds 1-6 Fire Damage

BOOTS

War Traveler (Battle Boots) - These boots are the only Magic Finding option you have for the slot. From them, you'll get up to 50% MF, unlimited running (thanks to slower stamina drain), and 25% Faster Run/Walk.

War Traveler

  • Defense: 120-139
  • Required Level: 42
  • Required Strength: 95
  • Kick Damage: 37-64
  • Durability: 48
    • +150-190% Enhanced Defense
    • 25% Faster Run/Walk
    • +10 to Vitality
    • +10 to Strength
    • Adds 15-25 Damage
    • +40% Slower Stamina Drain
    • Attacker Takes Damage Of 5-10
    • 30-50% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Immortal King's Pillar (War Boots) - These boots are worth it for this build only if you combine them with the Immortal King's Will, mind you (as only then they will boost your MF by 25%). They provide a very solid bonus to Attack Rating, which is very welcome, and an amazing +40% Faster Run/Walk.

Immortal King's Pillar

  • Defense: 118-128
  • Required Level: 64
  • Required Strength: 125
  • Kick Damage: 39-80
  • Durability: 24
    • +40% Faster Run/Walk
    • +110 to Attack Rating
    • +75 Defense
    • +44 to Life
    • 25% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items (2 items)

BELTS

Goldwrap (Heavy Belt) - The only real Magic Finding-oriented choice for the belt slot. It also provides a nice bonus to attack speed (which is needed to get to Berserk's breakpoint) and some extra defense.

Goldwrap

  • Defense: 34-36
  • Potion Slots: 12
  • Required Level: 27
  • Required Strength: 45
  • Durability: 18
    • +40-60% Enhanced Defense (varies)
    • +25 Defense
    • 10% Increased Attack Speed
    • 30% Better Chance Of Getting Magic Items
    • 50-80% Extra Gold From Monsters (varies)
    • +2 To Light Radius

Arachnid Mesh (Spiderweb Sash) - This is an interesting belt choice for a PitZerker. If you need some additional FCR for your Enigma, pick this one over Goldwrap.

Arachnid Mesh

  • Defense: 119-138
  • Required Level: 80
  • Required Strength: 50
  • Durability: 12
  • 16 Potion Boxes
    • +90-120% Enhanced Defense
    • Slows Target By 10%
    • +1 To All Skills
    • +20% Faster Cast Rate
    • Increases Maximum Mana 5%
    • Level 3 Venom (11 Charges)

CHARMS

  1. Gheed's Fortune -  The secret to Gheed's wealth and prosperity. Pretty much a must-have if you're after the best available charms. It adds 80-160% extra gold from monsters, reduces vendor prices by up to 15%, and gives up to 40% better magic find.
  2. Large Charms -  Using Large Charms in D2R is not recommended, with the exception of Hellfire Torch.
  3. Small Charms - With these, you should get as much Magic Find as you can. Small Charms give up to 7 MF each, so getting a full inventory of them is going to significantly boost your Magic Finding capabilities. 7-percenters are quite expensive, but you can get 5 and 6-percenters relatively cheaply. If you can afford it, you should aim to get these with MF and Attack Rating (this is where these get really expensive).

MERCENARY

We recommend picking up Act 2 Might Mercenary for extra damage bonuses. He should be equipped with:

  1. Insight Rune Word in Ethereal Spear - This provides a Meditation Aura that increases your Mana Recovery Rate which is extremely helpful as Enigma's Teleport and your War Cry can drain all of your mana very quickly.
  2. Fortitude Rune Word in Armor - This will ensure that your merc doesn't die (it will make him almost immortal).
  3. Andariel's Visage - An extremely solid and versatile headgear that will make your merc better in all respects.
