Build Overview
Lightning is the Sorceress' most versatile specialization with the best end-game capabilities. It's not advised for leveling and early Ladder because of very high gear requirements, and its initial struggle with the ubiquitous Lightning immune monster's on Hell difficulty. But when you get all the equipment, it's simply one of the best end-game farming builds in the game with insane mobility and clear speed. It allows you to kill most of the enemies with ease, break immunities with Griffon's Eye and Infinity Merc while keeping the Magic Find stat at a respectable level without having to sacrifice too much of your performance.
In this guide, we have included most of the viable end-game Items. We have not included low-level and leveling Items for this build, as simply the following setup is now advised for leveling up as a character below level 80 or so - for that phase, it's simply better to use other Sorceress builds like Blizzard/Frozen Orb/Meteor and their corresponding sets of equipment.

Skills
ATTRIBUTES |
COLD SPELLS |
The only Cold Spell that you should invest 1 point into is the Frozen Armor, which is the core defensive buff for the Sorceress class. Just 1 point is enough, as it will be increased globally by your equipment and provide sufficient defensive bonuses for your character that way Skills:
LIGHTNING SPELLS |
This is the core Skill Tree for this pure Lightning Sorceress build. You are going to take pretty much all the Skills in here with the exception of Energy Shield (though it could still find some uses in alternative versions of this build). Whether you pick up Teleport or not, will also depend on whether you are using Enigma or not. Other than that you want to max out all Lightning DPS Skills that you are going to use: Lightning and Chain Lightning and all of its synergy skills that boost its damage Skills:
FIRE SPELLS |
We want just a single Skill from this one for increased Mana Recovery. Just like with Frozen Armor, 1 point is enough here. Any excess points after level 94 can be allocated in it as well Skills:

Items
You should primarily try to plan your build so that you get to the 117% Faster Cast Rate - it shouldn't be hard, you can get it from HoTO, Griffon's, Spirit, and Arachnid Mesh, all quite a standard set of equipment for Sorceress. Then you aim to maximize the level of your All and then Lightning Skills, Faster Hit Recovery (getting Spirit Monarch should suffice), and all kinds of added Lightning Damage to Spells. If you want to deal with Lightning Immune monsters, getting Infinity Merc and Griffon's Eye is strongly advised |
HELMETS |
Griffon's Eye (Diadem) - the BiS item for this build which grants increases to All Skills, high FCR, and what's most important, high Lightning Resistance Penetration. Top Tier pick in terms of DPS
Harlequin Crest (Shako) - another great pick, however, it's mainly recommended for its' MF stat if you are looking to maximize Loot when farming mid-Tier content. You will be lacking some DPS and Lightning immune monster's will be more troublesome |
Crown of Ages (Corona) - a great and a bit more defensive option. Socketed with two 5/5 Lightning Rainbow Facets it still offers a decent DPS boost, and greatly increases your survivability |
WEAPONS |
Spirit Weapon (Runeword) - a very powerful Rune Word, though for this build it should be treated as a budget alternative to your end-game weapons like HoTO and well-rolled Eschuta |
[BiS] Heart of the Oak (Runeword) - An extremely solid end-game choice that provides +3 to all Skills and a 30% Faster Cast Rate. You can't go wrong with this one. |
[MF] The Oculus (Swirling Crystal) - This is a great end-game choice if you're after extra Magic Find (Oculus gives a whooping +50% MF). Other than that, it greatly boosts your offensive power and can quite often automatically teleport you when you take damage (which not often is a good thing, lol) |
Eschuta's Temper (Eldritch Orb) - a well-rolled one can be one of the best Weapons for this build. It should boost your Skills by 3 levels and offer high Lightning DPS boost, other than that you may be better off with some of the Weapons listed above |
SHIELDS | |
Spirit (Runeword) - Spirit is one of the best Rune Words for the off-hand slot as well. It grants very similar stats to that on a Weapon which include increases to all Skills and Faster Cast Rate, among other valuable bonuses |
Stormshield (Monarch) - a great defensive option for the off-hand slot. Stormshield offers a very high base chance to Block, but also the highest enemy damage reduction on a single item in the entire game by an insane 35% |
WEAPON SWAP | |
Call to Arms (Runeword) - assuming you are playing solo or without a Barbarin on your team, it's recommended to use Call to Arms Runewords on your weapon swap for the extra bonuses from Warcries. You are also looking to get any Shield with +2 to All Skills on the secondary slot to increase their effectiveness. When the buffs are active simply switch to your main weapons and proceed with the destruction. It consists of Amn Ral Mal Ist and Ohm Runes, which should be socketed in a low stat requirement item |
AMULETS |
Rare/Magic Amulet with + Sorceress/Lightning Spells would be ideal, but chances of finding these are extremely low. Most likely, you will end up with a Magic Amulet with Magic Find and/or Resistances
[BiS] Mara's Kaleidoscope - In a build that wants +All Skills, this amulet is a must for the end game. It provides a great combination of offensive (+2 to all skills) and defensive (+20-30 to all resistances) properties |
ARMORS |
Enigma (Runeword) - even though you can simply take Teleport from your Skill Tree, it's still one of the best armors for this build. It grants a lot of extra Skill levels, Faster Run/Walk that even further boost your mobility, and a high MF stat that's always good to have. Socket the required Jah, Ith, and Ber Runes in a Mage Plate preferably, for a low strength requirements |
Skin of the Vipermagi (Serpentskin Armor) - a very solid late-game choice if you want to have the highest possible DPS. It increases All Skills and FCR making it a great offensive option. |
Ormus' Robes (Dusk Shroud) - maybe a little less popular, but still a very viable option. If you roll it properly with +3 to Lightning Skills and high bonus Lightning Skill Damage, it can be a very solid piece of gear on your character |
RINGS |
Rare Rings - with Faster Cast Rate, Resistances, Magic Find, and Bonuses to Life are what you should be looking for early.
Raven Frost - This ring provides Freeze Immunity which is extremely important to have on every build |
The Stone of Jordan - If you're after some more offensive power, this Unique Ring will give you just that. Stone of Jordan increases the level of all your Skills, your max Mana and adds a moderate amount of extra Lightning Damage. Also, it's one of the most iconic items in Diablo 2 |
GLOVES |
Chance Guards (Chain Gloves) - one of the best pairs for this build. They are used solely for the Magic Find and Gold Find stats, but since you should be easily able to reach the desired 117% FCR breakpoint, you may well use such a pair in this slot |
Magefist (Light Gauntlets) - a very solid choice with extra FCR and Mana Regeneration. Sadly, it's not a Fire build, but they are still one of the best pairs here
BOOTS |
War Traveler (Battle Boots) - our top recommendation for this slot. War Travelers grant the highest Magic Find stat any on pair of boots in the game (if rolled properly). They also offer bonus STR, VIT, and high protection against Stamina drain, making them one of the best boots in the game for pretty much all the classes
Sandstorm Trek (Scarabshell Boots) - a good all-around pair with solid defensive utility and bonus Faster Hit Recovery. They also provide tons of Poison Resistance, and self-repair so you can use Ethreal ones for extra defenses |
BELTS |
Verdungo's Hearty Cord (Mithril Coil) - this Belt provides insane bonus to Life and Damage reduction, making it one of the best options here. |
[BIS] Arachnid Mesh (Spiderweb Sash) - our top recommendation for this build. After all, you are a Sorceress, and dealing damage is what Sorceress does best so you should also aim at miximing it. Arachnid Mesh grants extra FCR and increase to All Skills making it one of the most popular caster belts in the game |
CHARMS |
MERCENARY |
This build heavily relies on Act 2 Mercenary with equipped Infinity to break immunity on Monsters (or simply increase your Lightning DPS). You should also pick one with the Might Aura, it will boost your Merc's Physical Damage and allow him to deal extra damage to enemies (including ones with higher Lightning Resistance)
