Build Overview

Barbarian's Find Item is a unique Skill that allows you to get over 50% (at Skill Level 20 and up) more Item drops from enemies. This singlehandedly makes Barbarian the best farming character you can make, especially in the late game. In the early game (read - without an Enigma), Find Item is still a great Skill that will boost your gains significantly, especially if you stack Magic Find right from the start.

Before you can use Find Item, you have to defeat your enemies. This is where Berserk comes in - it is a very powerful offensive skill that deals high Magic Damage at the cost of lowering your defense to 0. With it and Find Item combined, the featured Build is capable of dispatching Rare and Champion enemies quickly, while getting over 50% more items from them.

 Pros  Cons
Great Utility and good Mobility   Needs Enigma to achieve its full potential
Extra Loot from Find Item - one of the best MB Builds for Diablo 2   Power Leveling as a Barb can be rather painful
 High Single-Target Damage   Single-Target-focused

Skills

ATTRIBUTES
  1. Strength - All you want, in terms of Strength, is enough of it to equip everything you will want to use on your character.
  2. Dexterity - Same as Strength - you only need enough Dexterity to meet gear requirements. Unless spending a few additional points on it is enough to achieve max block - then you should do just that.
  3. Vitality - You should put all your remaining points here - main stat.
  4. Energy - Adding points to Energy is an extreme waste - don't do it.
COMBAT SKILLS

As far as Combat Skills go, we're mainly interested in Berserk which is our main offensive skill. However, Concentrate and Stun also find their uses as they provide some nice (but somewhat situational) utility.

Skills:

  1. Bash [1/20] - Prerequisite. Attacks an enemy and knocks them back.
  2. Stun [1/20] - Strike an enemy, temporarily stunning them. A very nice utility skill; you will use it mainly to paralyze stronger monsters so that you can deal with them easily.
  3. Concentrate [1/20] - Attacks an enemy and raises concentration, temporarily increasing Defense. At level 1, this increases your defenses by 100% which is very significant and will definitely help you survive in difficult situations - use this skill as needed.
  4. Berserk [20/20] - A very powerful all-out attack that leaves you vulnerable to enemy counterattacks (it removes all your defense for a brief moment after you attack). Berserk converts all your Physical Damage into Magic Damage, which allows you to bypass any physical resistances monsters might have. Moreover, you won't be affected by Physical Damage Reflection when using Berserk (effects, like Thorns). The trade-off is, you won't benefit from Life or Mana Leech when using the skill.

WARCRIES

From here, we'll get some much-needed utility, Berserk Synergies, and one broken loot-generating skill.

Skills:

  1. Skills:

  2. Find Potion [1/20] - Prerequisite. Attempts to find a random potion in a monster's corpse.
  3. Howl [20/20] - Frightens nearby enemies, causing them to run away in fear. Once you're geared and ready to focus on farming Rare and Champion enemies while skipping all trash mobs, you should have this Skill maxed out - you will be using it to scatter trash so that you can skip it and get to your targets easier. Each point invested in Howl increases its Fear's Radius and Duration. Moreover, Howl synergizes with Berserk.
  4. Shout [X/20] - An AoE Buff that improves the defense rating of you and your party. Having this active at all times will improve your survivability significantly. You should spend all your remaining points here to boost your Berserk (each point spent on Shout increases the Magic Damage of Berserk by +10%).
  5. Find Item [20/20] - Attempts to find a random item in a monster's corpse. You'd be surprised how much rare loot you can actually find with this. At Skill Level 20, this has a 51% chance of working, making it a real game-changer when it comes to magic find and loot runs in general (think of this as a 51% chance of getting double loot from Rare and Elite enemies(!)).
  6. Battle Orders [1/20] - Increases the max Life, Mana, and Stamina of you and your party.
  7. Battle Command [1/20] - Increases all current skill levels for you and your party. With this, you can get +1 All Skills, which is great. Any subsequent points only increase the duration, so 1 hard point spent here is enough (just 5 soft points are enough to boost the duration to almost a minute).
COMBAT MASTERIES

This Skill Tree contains some great passives - we'll take full advantage of them.

Skills:

  1. Sword/Axe/Mace Mastery {20/20] - Increases your Attack Rating, Critical Strike Chance, and Damage when using Swords/Axes/Maces. You should max out the mastery that corresponds to your main weapon.
  2. Increased Stamina [1/20] - Boosts your Stamina Recovery Rate and increases your Stamina. This Passive suffers from heavy diminishing returns, so you should spend just 1 point on it.
  3. Iron Skin [1/20] - A passive skill that increases your overall Defense. At level one, it provides a 30% Bonus which is enough, especially if you have some soft points from gear.
  4. Increased Speed [1/20] - Increases your Run/Walk Speed. Just as Increased Stamina, this skill suffers from heavy diminishing returns - spending more than 1 point on it is a waste.
  5. Natural Resistance [1/20] - A passive skill that increases your natural resistances to elemental and poison damage. Spending 1 point here is a good investment, especially if you have +All Skills bonuses from gear.

Items

Firstly, You will want to increase the level of All Skills/Barbarian Skills to the highest level possible. For Barbarians this is an even more important stat because of all the Warcries and Passives that benefit from it - because of this, all other stats and bonuses have a lower priority. The other offensive stat you want to focus on is Increased Attack Speed (you'll need a total of +42% of IAS as it's your final Breakpoint). Secondly, try to avoid Life and Mana Leech as won't work with Berserk and thus are close to useless. Thirdly, don't ever use any item that adds Cold Damage as Cold Damage has a chance of shattering your enemies, making using the Find Item on them impossible (bye, bye Raven Frost). Fourthly, you should stack as much Magic Find as possible because you benefit from it twice as much as other Classes, thanks to the Find Item.

HELMETS

[Early] Lore (Runeword) - This is a great starter Helmet and you won't upgrade it for a long time unless you get very lucky. It gives you everything you might want, except for Magic Find.

AMULETS

[Early] Rare/Magic Amulet with + Barbarian/Combat Skills/Warcries/Combat Masteries would be ideal, but chances of finding these are extremely low. Most likely, you will end up with a Magic Amulet with Magic Find and/or Resistances.

Amulet Amulet

  • Required Level: varies.
  • In Magic Amulets, look for:
    • + to Combat Skills.
    • + to Warcries.

    • Resistances.
  • In Rare Amulets, look for:
    • + to Barbarian Skills
    • Magic Find
    • Resistances

    • +2 To All Skills
    • All Resistances +20-30 (varies)

[Late] Enigma (Runeword) - Arguably, the best item in the entire game. Without it, any character that is not a Sorceress is a mere shadow of itself. CHARMS

  1. Grand Charms -  If you're lucky and you find Grand Charms with +Combat Skills, Combat Masteries, or Warcries early, consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, use any of these that offer useful bonuses - Magic Find, Resistances, Life, etc.
  2. Large Charms -  You can find Magic Find, Resistances and bonuses to Life on these which makes them useful early on - if you find these, you should definitely use them.
  3. Small Charms - You should get Small Charms with Magic Find and Attack Rating as they are ideal for the build. Also, Small Charms are the best if you want to boost your Magic Find to astronomic values, simply because they take the least inventory space.
  4. As for Unique Charms; if you can afford them - use them.

MERCENARY

Equipping a mercenary early on can be extremely difficult as finding a 4-Socket Polearm (for Insight Runeword) can take a lot of time, however, if you manage to do that, you should definitely employ a Merc as it will help you on your ventures. Please note that the below-mentioned recommendations can turn out to be quite expensive, especially early on.

We recommend picking up Act 2 Defiance Mercenary for extra damage mitigation bonuses. He should be equipped with:

  1. Insight Rune Word in Ethereal Spear - This provides a Meditation Aura that increases your Mana Recovery Rate which is extremely helpful as Enigma's Teleport can drain all of your mana very quickly.
  2. Fortitude Rune Word in Armor - This Runeword gives solid defenses that are necessary to keep your merc alive.
  3. Vampire Gaze - An extremely solid and versatile headgear that will make your merc much more durable.
  4. The rest of the Merc's equipment will mainly depend on your budget and drops - focusing on items with extra defense, life/vitality, life leech, or offensive mods (like crushing blow) is generally a good idea.
