Build Overview

Whirlwind is one of the most popular types of abilities to be found in every ARPG. It makes you spin whilst dealing damage to surrounding enemies with your weapon. It makes for a high damage uptime as you can move while attacking at the same time, you won't need to stop to make a quick sidestep. Here it is the only damaging ability, but we're also using Shouts - three of them, and the Ultimate ability that also grants temporary buffs. It's an extremely durable build due to the Fortify, but also a mobile one as the multiple enhancements like Berserking provides Movement Speed bonuses. We'd recommend this build to all kinds of players as it's a staple build of the whole genre.

Please keep in mind, that the following Guide explains the basic variant of the build, without diving into all alternative variants that may utilize different utility skills for various benefits. This will be obviously updated as we have a chance to test out this build properly in the actual game.

Skills

WHIRLWIND [5/5]

The most important, and one of the simplest core abilities. It deals Physical Damage to surrounding enemies as you channel it. You can move while doing so to dodge attacks while dealing damage at the same time.

Modifiers:

  1. Enhanced Whirlwind [1/1] - Generates 1 Fury on hit per each enemy you've dealt damage to, four times as much against Elite enemies.
  2. Violent Whirlwind [1/1] - After two seconds of continuous channeling Whirlwind deals x30% increased damage.

RALLYING CRY [5/5]

For the next 6 seconds your Movement Speed is increased by +30%, and Resource Generation by x56%. It results in faster Fury recovery. This effect lasts half as long for nearby allies.

Modifiers:

  1. Enhanced Rallying Cry [1/1] - Rallying Cry also grants Unstoppable so you can use Whirlwind uninterrupted.
  2. Tactical Rallying Cry [1/1] - The Skill instantly grants you 20 Fury, and increases the Resource Generation to x76% for even more Fury.

CHALLENGING SHOUT [5/5]

Taunts nearby enemies and grants you a 48% Damage Reduction. It lasts 6 seconds.

Modifiers:

  1. Enhanced Challenging Shout [1/1] - Your gain an x20% bonus to Maximum Life for the Shout duration.
  2. Tactical Challenging Shout [1/1] - For the Shout's duration, you will be granted 3 Fury each time you take damage.

WAR CRY [1/5]

Increases your damage dealt by x15% for the next 6 seconds, 3 seconds for nearby allies. Rank 1 is enough for this Skill.

Modifiers:

  1. Enhanced War Cry [1/1] - War Cry grants you Berserking for 4 seconds. This status increases your damage by 25% and your Movement Speed by 30%.
  2. Power War Cry [1/1] - The damage bonus of this Skill grows by x10% if there are at least 6 enemies while you perform it.

WRATH OF THE BERSERKER [1/1]

The Ultimate Ability. It grants you the Unstoppable and Berserking status for 5 seconds. If you would use a Basic Skill (Lunging Strike) during the next 10 seconds it will grant you Bersrking for 5 seconds - do so. Note that you already can get Unstoppable from Rallying Shout, and Berserking from War Cry, so use this Skill after their duration is over.

Modifiers:

  1. Prime Wrath of the Berserker [1/1] - While this skill is active, gain +20% Movement Speed and increased Fury Generation by x30%.
  2. Supreme Wrath of the Berserker [1/1] - While this skill is active, for every 50 Fury you spend your damage bonus is increased by x25%.

GROUND STOMP [1/5]

Deals very low damage and Stuns all surrounding enemies for 3 seconds. Here it is used to reduce the Cooldown of your Ultimate Skill.

Modifiers:

  1. Enhanced Ground Stomp [1/1] - Increases the Skill's duration by 1 second.
  2. Strategic Ground Stomp [1/1] - For each enemy affected by the Stomp, the Ultimate Skill's Cooldown is reduced by 1 second.

LUNGING STRIKE [2/5]

This Basic Skill is used primarily for leveling and is not very useful. Here, however, it will get you some bonuses due to the Ultimate Skill - Wrath of the Berserker.

Passive Skills

BOOMING VOICE [3/3]

Shout Skills (Rallying Cry, War Cry, and Challenging Shout) have their effect duration increased by 24%.

RAID LEADER [3/3]

Shouts heal allies for 3% of their Maximum Life a second. It's great as you use three of them.

GUTTURAL YELL [3/3]

Enemies affected by your Shouts will deal 12% less damage for 5 seconds.

SWIFTNESS [3/3]

It simply increases your Movement Speed by 12% which is great in a Whirlwind build.

PIT FIGHTER [3/3]

You gain a 6% Distant Damage Reduction and x9% increased damage against enemies Close to you.

SLAYING STRIKE [3/3]

You deal x24% increased damage against Injured enemies.

HAMSTRING [1/3]

Bleeding Effects Slow enemies by 10%. It synergizes well with the No Mercy passive, only one point here is needed.

THICK SKIN [3/3]

Taking Direct Damage will Fortify you based on how much Maximum Life you have.

COUNTEROFFENSIVE [3/3]

If you're Fortified for over 50% of your Maximum Life, gain x12% increased damage.

Key Passive

UNBRIDLED RAGE

It's an easy choice. Core Skills (Whirlwind) deal x135% increased damage but cost x100% more Fury. You have an excellent Fury Generation so it's not a big issue.

Technique

Two-Handed Sword Expertise

Use it for 20% of direct damage being inflicted as Bleeding over 5 seconds. It's good against tough enemies, and procs Hamstring passive.

Items

Here's the stat priority list. This build heavily relies on Critical Strikes for damage, and CRD to Shout with higher frequency. It uses only the Core Skill to deal damage at close range. It'd be great to have some extra mobility or defensive qualities due to its melee playstyle.

  1. 2-Hand - Core Skill DMG → % Crit DMG → % DMG to Close
  2. Helm - % CDR → % Max Resource → All Stats → % DMG while Berserking
  3. Chest Armor - % DMG Reduction from Close → % DMG Reduction → % Physical DMG
  4. Gloves - % Crit DMG → Whirlwind → % Crit Chance → All Stats
  5. Pants - Dodge → % DMG Reduction → % Max Life → % DMG Reduction
  6. Boots -% Move Speed → Dodge → All Stat → % Elemental Res
  7. Amulet - % CDR → % Max Resource → % Resource Cost Reduction
  8. Rings - % Crit Chance → % Crit DMG → % Max Resource

In the Sockets use Sapphire Gem in a Weapon slot for Critical Strike Damage against enemies you've Immobilized with Ground Stomp. Use Ruby Gem in your Armor simply to increase your Maximum Life or a Sapphire Gem if you're often Fortified. For the Jewelry, choose Skull for the extra Armor, or Diamond for Resistance.

RECOMMENDED UNIQUE ITEMS

Harlequin Crest (Helm) - One of the most popular helmets in the entire Diablo series. Use it for extra Armor, Maximum Life, CDR, Resource Generation, +20 to All Stats, Damage Reduction, and +4 Ranks to all Skills. All of these qualities are extremely valuable.

Harlequin Crest

+Maximum Life

+Cooldown Reduction

+Crafting Material Find

+All Stats

+Gain [10.0 - 20.0%] Damage Reduction. In addition, gain +4 Ranks to all Skills.

Ramaladni’s Magnum Opus (Dual-Wield Weapon 1) - One of the best weapons you could use. It grants a lot of Damage if the conditions are met, restores Fury on Lucky Hit, and increases damage per Fury. You should be able to sustain its 2 Fury/s drain.

Ramaladni’s Magnum Opus

+ Critical Strike Damage

+ Damage with Dual-Wielded Weapons

+ Damage to Close Enemies

+ Physical Damage

Lucky Hit: Up to a 5% Chance to Restore +[7 – 14]% Primary Resource

+Skills using this weapon deal x{0.1/0.3}% increased damage per point of Fury you have, but you lose 2.0 Fury every second.

CODEX OF POWER
Legendary Aspects

Mandatory/Heavily recommended Aspects

  1. Aspect of Berserk Fury grants up to 6 Fury each second you're Berserking. It's great with the Wrath of the Berserker and War Cry.
  2. Relentless Berserker's Aspect makes your Whirlwind Hits able to extend the duration of Berserking by 1 second, or 2 seconds on Critical Strike. It has up to 40% chance of occurring.

Optional Aspects

  1. Aspect of the Dire Whirlwind is great with the Violent Whirlwind mod. This Aspect increases Crit Chance each time you're channeling Whirlwind, and after three seconds it reaches its maximum of up to 24%.
  2. Aspect of Limitless Rage pairs well with Resource Generation. While at full Fury, each next point of Fury generated increases Whirlwind's Damage by 1 or 2%. It stacks up to 15 times.
  3. Aspect of Numbing Wrath. While at full Fury, each next point of Fury generated grants Fortify. It's again only good with particularly good Fury Generation.
  4. Edgemaster's Aspect makes you deal increased Damage the more Fury you have. If you're at full Fury, it's 20% increased Damage.
  5. Aspect of Echoing Fury grants your Shouts Fury generation - up to 4 a second per active Shout.
  6. Bold Chieftain's Aspect. Using a Shout reduces its Cooldown by 1 to 1.9 seconds per nearby enemy. You can reduce its Cooldown by up to 6 seconds this way.

Paragon

1st Board - Starting Board

Nodes - Pick up Strength around the Glyph Socket.

Glyphs - Ambidextrous Glyph is excellent if you're wielding two weapons, it simply increases damage.

2nd Board - Carnage Board

Nodes - Allocate the Legendary node - while Berserking your Crits increase Attack Speed for 6 seconds.

Glyphs - Marshal Glyph reduces Cooldown in a similar way to Bold Chieftain's Aspect, but it's always 1.2 seconds for the Shout you're using.

3rd Board - Warbringer Board

Nodes - The Legendary node grants 12% of Maximum Life as Fortify for every 75% Fury you spend.

Glyphs - Territorial Glyph grants a 10% Damage Reduction against Close enemies and increases damage dealt to them per Dexterity in its radius.

4th Board - Flawless Technique Board

Nodes - Get the Legendary node. It simply increases your Crit Chance while continuously attacking, and it only works with One-Handed weapons.

Glyphs - Ire Glyph makes you take 10% reduced damage from Elites while Berserking, and increases your damage while Berserking per Strength in its radius.
