Curses/Dark Pact Necromancer Build Guide for PD2
Detonate entire packs with stacked Curses and massive Magic Damage in one of Necromancer's most unique Mapping builds.Curses/Dark Pacta Necromancer Build
Last Update: September 28, 2026
Introduction
The Curses/Dark Pact Necromancer is one of the most distinctive caster builds in Project Diablo 2, turning the Necromancer's Curse tree into a powerful source of direct Magic Damage. The core gameplay revolves around covering enemy packs with multiple Curses and detonating them with Dark Pact, creating large overlapping explosions that become particularly effective in dense Maps. Curse Mastery allows additional Curses to remain active on the same target, while skills such as Decrepify, Weaken, Amplify Damage, or Lower Resist provide valuable defensive and party utility between Dark Pact casts.
The Build performs best when played actively, using Blood Warp to move between packs, applying the required Curses, and immediately following with Dark Pact. Its Magic Damage gives it very broad Map coverage, while the Curse setup greatly reduces the threat posed by nearby enemies. Dark Pact also benefits heavily from monster density, allowing several explosions to overlap across tightly packed groups. Bosses and isolated targets take longer to bring down, making Mapping the Build's strongest area of performance.
For this guide, we focus on the standard active Curse setup rather than the specialized Lazy Dark Pact variant. The latter can automate much of the Curse application and produce very smooth solo clears, but relies on specific equipment and gives up some control, safety, and single-target flexibility. The active version scales naturally through Dark Pact, Curse Mastery, Iron Maiden, additional Curse levels, Faster Cast Rate, and strong Necromancer gear, while keeping the Build's excellent utility intact. Recent balance changes reduced some of Dark Pact's synergy scaling and fixed a Magic Damage multiplier bug, but the Build still sits among the stronger current Necromancer Mapping options.
Recommended Breakpoints
- Faster Hit Recovery (FHR): 39% minimum, 56% recommended
- Faster Cast Rate (FCR): 75% minimum, 125% recommended
Stat Allocation
- Strength: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Dexterity: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Vitality: Invest enough for a comfortable Life pool during progression
- Energy: Invest most remaining Points in optimized endgame setups
Necromancers gain considerable value from Energy, as every Point strengthens Bone Armor's Physical Damage absorption while also improving Mana and Mana regeneration. This works particularly well for Dark Pact, which repeatedly casts several Skills in quick succession and can become Mana-intensive at high FCR. During progression, keeping more Points in Vitality is safer; once Resistances, Life from gear, and Bone Armor are established, shifting heavily toward Energy provides better overall efficiency.
Pros
- Deals Magic Damage, avoiding most elemental immunity problems
- Multiple Curses provide exceptional crowd control and party utility
- Strong physical protection through Energy-scaled Bone Armor
- Excellent clear speed in dense Maps thanks to overlapping Dark Pact explosions
Cons
- Requires repeatedly applying several Curses for maximum Dark Pact Damage
- 125% FCR greatly improves gameplay but can restrict high-end gearing choices

Skill Trees

The Curses/Dark Pact Necromancer can be leveled directly as a Curse caster, although the early game feels noticeably better once Curse Mastery allows multiple Curses to remain active at the same time. Until then, your Mercenary, Golem, and basic utility Skills help carry tougher encounters while Dark Pact gradually becomes the main clearing tool.
Your main progression goal is to max Dark Pact, Curse Mastery, and Iron Maiden first. These three Skills form the core of the Build and give the biggest return for both Damage and overall functionality. After that, continue investing into Decrepify and Weaken, which improve Dark Pact while also making dangerous packs much easier to control.
Take Blood Warp and Bone Armor with one Point each as soon as they become useful. Blood Warp quickly becomes essential for fast Mapping, while Bone Armor adds an important defensive layer. Once the main Curse package is complete, finish your remaining Curse investment and keep Amplify Damage, Lower Resist, and summon utility as one-point options unless your party setup or equipment gives you a specific reason to invest more.
Gear
Blackhand Key is one of the best Weapons for a standard active Dark Pact Necromancer. It provides strong Necromancer and Curse Skill bonuses, Faster Cast Rate, and useful sustain, making it an excellent all-around choice for both Damage and Mapping comfort. A high-end Rare or Magic Wand with strong Dark Pact, Curse, or Magic Skill modifiers can offer more raw Damage, but usually requires better supporting gear to maintain the 125% FCR breakpoint. Obsession is the main two-handed alternative, trading the flexibility of a Shield for very strong offensive scaling and a smoother Curse/Dark Pact rotation.
For the Shield, Darkforce Spawn is the strongest general option for the one-handed setup. Additional Curse Skills, Faster Cast Rate, Maximum Mana, and an extra Curse slot all directly support Dark Pact's core mechanics. A strong Rare or Crafted Necromancer Head with Skills, Faster Cast Rate, Resistances, and sockets can be a very competitive alternative, especially when you value survivability or can gain additional Dark Pact levels through staffmods.
For the Helmet, Harlequin Crest is an excellent balanced choice thanks to +Skills, Life, Mana, and Physical Damage Reduction. A strong Magic +3 Curses Circlet offers more offensive potential, while a Rare or Crafted +2 Necromancer Circlet with Faster Cast Rate, Resistances, Life, and sockets is often the best high-end option when you need to balance Damage with breakpoint requirements.
Skin of the Vipermagi is one of the most practical Body Armour choices because it combines +Skills, Faster Cast Rate, and Resistances in a single slot. Atma's Wail can be used in more defensive setups, while high-end Rare or Crafted caster Armour becomes attractive when your other slots already cover enough FCR. Builds using Obsession often have more freedom here because the Weapon contributes heavily toward the casting breakpoint.
Trang-Oul's Claws are the standard Gloves choice and fit the Build extremely well with Faster Cast Rate and additional Curse Skill Levels. Magefist is a workable alternative when you need Regenerate Mana or simply do not have a good pair of Trang Gloves, but it offers less direct Damage for Dark Pact.
For the Belt, Arachnid Mesh is the strongest general option thanks to +1 Skill and Faster Cast Rate. Siggard's Staunch can be used in more defensive or specialized setups, particularly when you already have enough FCR elsewhere and want additional survivability. Strong Rare or Crafted caster belts are also viable if they help solve Resistances or Attributes.
Silkweave is one of the best Boots choices because Mana After Each Kill helps sustain repeated Curse casting and Blood Warp movement. Waterwalk provides a more defensive alternative with additional Life, while strong Rare Boots with Faster Run/Walk, Faster Hit Recovery, Resistances, and Life can be the best option when the rest of the gear is already optimized for Damage.
For the Amulet, a Magic +3 Curses Amulet is one of the strongest pure offensive choices. A Rare or Crafted +2 Necromancer Amulet with Faster Cast Rate, Mana, Resistances, or Attributes offers much more flexibility and is often preferred when assembling the 125% FCR setup. Mara's Kaleidoscope remains a simple and reliable alternative when you need extra Resistances without sacrificing Skill Levels.
For Rings, Stone of Jordan, Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band, and Wisp Projector are all strong high-end choices once the FCR breakpoint is secured. Rare or Crafted FCR Rings are extremely valuable when the rest of the setup falls short of 125% FCR, especially if they also provide Mana, Life, Resistances, or Attributes.
Charms
For the Dark Pact Necromancer, Large Charms with +3% Magic Skill Damage are one of the strongest ways to increase pure endgame Damage. Dark Pact is tagged as a Magic Skill, so these Charms directly scale its explosions and become particularly effective once the Build already has very high Skill Levels from equipment.
Curse Skill Grand Charms remain an excellent alternative and can be mixed with Magic Damage Charms. They increase Dark Pact itself together with the rest of your Curse package, making them particularly attractive during progression or when you value stronger utility alongside Damage. Start with a Necromancer Hellfire Torch and Annihilus, then build the rest of the inventory around either option.
Use the remaining Small Charms for Life, Mana, Resistances, and Faster Hit Recovery. In a fully optimized offensive setup, most available Charm space can be dedicated to +3% Magic Skill Damage, while Curse Skillers provide a more balanced approach.
Mercenary
An Act 4 Light Mercenary is the most synergistic endgame partner for the Dark Pact Necromancer. His Sanctuary Aura reduces enemy Magic Resistance, directly increasing Dark Pact's Damage, while his healing spells provide additional sustain during aggressive Blood Warp Mapping. Sanctuary is one of the few ways to reduce Magic Resistance, which makes this Mercenary particularly valuable for Magic Damage builds.
Insight is the most practical Weapon because the Build consumes a considerable amount of Mana while repeatedly casting several Curses and Dark Pact. Mang Song's Lesson is a more offensive alternative, using its high +Skills to strengthen the Mercenary's native Sanctuary Aura.
- Insight or Mang Song's Lesson (Weapon)
- Harlequin Crest, Steel Shade, or Andariel's Visage (Helmet)
- Skin of the Vipermagi, Shaftstop, or Innocence (Armour)
- Magefist or strong Rare/Crafted FCR Gloves (Gloves)
- Arachnid Mesh or Verdungo's Hearty Cord (Belt)
- strong Rare Boots with Resistances and defensive modifiers (Boots)
Final Thoughts
The Curses/Dark Pact Necromancer rewards fast rotations and dense Maps. Blood Warp into position, layer several Curses across the pack, detonate them with Dark Pact, and immediately move toward the next group. Magic Damage gives the Build excellent coverage across different Map types, while the Curse package provides strong crowd control and valuable party utility.
High Curse Levels, 125% FCR, Magic Skill Damage Charms, and Sanctuary support push the Build much further in the endgame. Once these pieces come together, Dark Pact becomes a fast and distinctive Necromancer mapper with excellent pack-clearing potential and a highly active playstyle.
