Last Update: November 3, 2026
Introduction
The Counterattack of the Swarm Spiritborn can clear a dungeon whithout stopping. A cast of Counterattack releases a cluster of vicious Pestilent Swarms, and Ring of Writhing Moon keeps them circling close to the character. Rush into the next pack and the insects follow, spreading Poison through enemies that have not even reached you yet. It is a fast, unusually mobile way to play a damage-over-time build, with the satisfying bonus of watching stragglers fall behind you.
The engine starts with Counterattack of the Swarm. This variant turns Counterattack into a Centipede Skill and makes its active effect send out three Poison swarms. Aspect of Pestilence gives them more damage and a longer lifetime, while Aspect of Infestation adds a further Poisoning effect. The ring supplies fresh swarms every few seconds and allows them to orbit. Once several effects are active, the best part of the build is that you can keep moving while your damage continues working.
To keep that pressure going, the Spiritborn uses a pair of Jaguar Spirit Hall choices and Loyalty's Mantle. Counterattack already has the Jaguar tag, so the Helm helps it recover more quickly, while the additional Jaguar skill bonuses make a useful difference across the rotation. Ravager improves Cooldown Rate, Rushing Claw supplies sharp bursts of movement, and Aspect of Kinetic Suppression converts those dashes into Resolve. A properly timed Counterattack consumes none of that protection, but becomes much more dangerous when enough Resolve has built up.
There are still moments when this build demands attention. Counterattack has charges, and its recovery needs careful handling during long boss encounters. The Devourer provides an excellent damage window, but a boss without smaller enemies around will survive far longer than a crowded dungeon pack. With solid Cooldown Rate, a defensive chest and a reliable source of Resolve, the character has a comfortable mixture of speed, Poison damage and survivability for endgame farming.
Pros
- Excellent Pack Clearing
- VERY fast Mobility
- Strong Poison Damage
- Nice Defensive Tools
Cons

Equipment
Ring of Writhing Moon is the first item worth farming. Its automatic Pestilent Swarm appears every four seconds, and the ring changes the swarm movement into a tight orbit around you. That is what makes rushing through a dungeon feel so different from a conventional caster. The Counterattack of the Swarm variant provides the next group of swarms on demand. Without the ring, Counterattack still deals damage, but your Poison coverage is much less convenient.
Loyalty's Mantle takes the Helm slot. Choosing Jaguar in both Spirit Hall positions empowers the matching bonuses and improves Jaguar Skill Cooldown Reduction. Since Counterattack is naturally a Jaguar Skill, the Helm supports the attack that drives the whole build. The same effect also adds damage to Jaguar Skills. Harmony of Ebewaka is a possible alternative if you need a more general damage bonus, although it does not provide the same cooldown-focused advantage for the double-Jaguar setup.
A Legendary Quarterstaff with Aspect of Infestation handles the weapon slot. The Aspect adds Poisoning damage to your Pestilent Swarms, making every cast worthwhile even after you have dashed away from the target. Aspect of Pestilence goes on Gloves and strengthens the swarms while keeping them active longer. These two effects are the offensive foundation of the character. Prioritize Damage Over Time and Poison damage.
Aspect of Kinetic Suppression on Boots gives Rushing Claw a second job. Each Non-Basic Mobility Skill cast grants Resolve, and a Defensive Skill activated with eight Resolve stacks gains a substantial damage multiplier. Rushing Claw can generate the stacks while carrying you into a group; then Counterattack spends its charges at a much better moment. Aspect of Glynn's Anvil on Chest Armor raises your maximum Resolve and provides steady Damage Reduction, so this same loop also makes the Spiritborn much, much harder to kill.
Aspect of Alacrity on Ring 2 increases the Cooldown Rate of Defensive and Mobility Skills while moving. That is important for Counterattack, especially when a fight lasts longer than its opening wave of swarms. The effect rewards your normal movement between enemies and works alongside the Cooldown Rate from Ravager. On Pants, Aspect of Debilitating Toxins provides straightforward protection and makes Poisoned enemies less dangerous. They should already be Poisoned once the swarms have reached them.
Use Aspect of Supremacy on the Amulet for damage during The Devourer. Killing enemies while your Ultimate is active builds Supremacy, and a short-lived bonus remains when it expires. This helps large groups disappear quickly, although single-target encounters offer fewer chances to build stacks. For the Talisman, complete Balazan's Bite with five Charms and place Protection of the Prime in the sixth slot for Dodge Chance and Damage Reduction while moving.
On Legendary pieces, favor Ranks to Counterattack, Cooldown Reduction, Damage Over Time, Dexterity and Maximum Life. Poison damage and Vulnerable Damage are valuable where the right modifiers are available; Movement Speed makes the build play more smoothly. Check Armor and Elemental Resistances before stacking more offense. Greater Affixes on Counterattack Ranks, useful Cooldown stats and key defenses provide good long-term improvements.
Balazan's Bite
- Berú of Balazan's Bite
- Fer of Balazan's Bite
- Linta of Balazan's Bite
- Mlor of Balazan's Bite
- Phoba of Balazan's Bite
- (2) Set: Your Poisoning effects last 80% longer and Weaken enemies.
- (3) Set: Gain 40% Maximum Life. Dealing Poisoning damage has a 10% chance to Heal you for 5% of your Maximum Life.
- (5) Set: Every 6 seconds, a Non-Boss enemy who you Poisoned for more than their remaining Life is killed instantly and unleashes Scourge. Scourge increases your Poison damage by 250% for 10 seconds.
Ring of Writhing Moon
- Poison Damage Multiplier
A Pestilent Swarm spawns from you every 4 seconds, dealing [188 - 225] Poison damage per hit. Your Pestilent Swarms now orbit around you and reduce an equipped Eagle Skill's Cooldown by 0.25 seconds per hit.
Loyalty's Mantle
- Maximum Life
When both Spirit Hall choices match, their bonuses are 100% more potent. Skills of that Spirit gain [50 - 60]% Vigor Cost Reduction and Cooldown Reduction, and deal [50 - 60]%[x] increased damage.
Harmony of Ebewaka
- Maximum Life
According to your secondary Spirit Hall choice, your Skills are all additionally Jaguar, Eagle, Gorilla, or Centipede Skills. Your Skills deal [20 - 25]%[x] increased damage per Spirit type they have.
Protection of the Prime
While moving, gain [25 - 30]% Dodge Chance and Damage Reduction. These benefits linger for 2 seconds after you stop moving. After standing still for 2 seconds, become Unstoppable until you move.
The Legendary Aspects fit the following equipment slots: Infestation on the Quarterstaff, Pestilence on Gloves, Kinetic Suppression on Boots, Glynn's Anvil on Chest Armor, Debilitating Toxins on Pants, Alacrity on Ring 2 and Supremacy on Amulet. The Helm and Ring 1 remain occupied by their Uniques. Each Aspect is placed on a compatible item category.
Aspect of Infestation
Pestilent Swarms now also deal [60 - 80]% of their normal damage as Poisoning damage over 6 seconds.
Aspect of Pestilence
Pestilent Swarms deal 100%[x] increased damage, last 50% longer, and spiral outwards.
Aspect of Kinetic Suppression
Casting a Non-Basic Mobility Skill grants 3 Resolve. Casting a Defensive Skill with 8 stacks of Resolve increases its damage by 150%[x].
Aspect of Glynn's Anvil
Gain 2 additional Maximum Resolve. Each Resolve stack grants [2.5 - 4.0]% Damage Reduction, up to [25 - 40]%.
Aspect of Alacrity
Your Defensive and Mobility Skills gain 75% Cooldown Rate while moving.
Aspect of Debilitating Toxins
Gain 30% Damage Reduction. Poisoned enemies deal 15% less damage to you.
Aspect of Supremacy
Killing enemies while an Ultimate Skill is active grants Supremacy, increasing damage by 9%[x] per stack, up to 90%[x]. When the Ultimate ends, gain 5 stacks that fall off one per second.
A Legendary Quarterstaff leaves room to temper the weapon for damage and gives Aspect of Infestation the benefit of a two-handed offensive slot. If your Rushing Claw charges or Counterattack recovery still feel awkward, improve Cooldown Reduction before investing in additional damage rolls. Large Poison numbers are only useful if you can keep a fresh set of swarms around the enemies you are fighting.
Skills
15/15Main Damage: Counterattack of the Swarm releases three Pestilent Swarms when activated. Ring of Writhing Moon keeps the swarms circling close enough to damage new targets as you move, while the two offensive swarm Aspects make their Poisoning much more threatening. Counterattack is also the main Defensive Skill that benefits from the eight-Resolve threshold of Kinetic Suppression.
Maximize Counterattack and select Counterattack of the Swarm, Cooldown Reduction and Damage Bonus. Build Resolve with Rushing Claw before a large cast.
1/15Mobility/Resolve: Rushing Claw moves you straight through a target, carrying the orbiting swarms into the next pack. Because it is a Non-Basic Mobility Skill, Aspect of Kinetic Suppression grants Resolve whenever you cast it. The mobility is excellent for farming, but spending every charge immediately can leave you exposed in a boss arena.
Choose Evasive Swipe, Incarnate Duration and Charge Increase. Keep a charge available for dangerous mechanics or a distant enemy. Rushing Claw also helps keep the movement condition for Aspect of Alacrity active.
15/15Cooldown/Offense: Ravager speeds up the rotation by raising Cooldown Rate during its active period. Its Ferocity bonuses also help you maintain the frantic pace that makes a Jaguar-heavy Spiritborn enjoyable. Use it when entering dangerous packs or before a longer Counterattack sequence.
Take Flurry of Claws, Duration Increase and Ferocity Maximum. Flurry of Claws adds Cooldown Rate while the Skill is active, which is especially valuable after you spend Counterattack charges.
15/15Defense/Poison: Toxic Skin provides another source of Poison, grants Unhindered while active and helps maintain pressure when you rush through enemies. The armor from Skuttle Bug and the Weaken it applies are useful in any fight where you need to stay close enough for your swarms to connect.
Choose Skuttle Bug, Healing and Vigor Generation. Activate Toxic Skin before charging into a difficult group. Its utility is useful even though Counterattack, not Toxic Skin, supplies most of the build's damage.
1/15Control/Defense: Scourge releases a wave of insects that Fears and Slows enemies, giving you time to keep the Poison damage ticking. Hive Mind makes the effect stay around you, and the selected upgrades apply Vulnerable and Weaken. It is a reliable button to press when enemies break through your defensive layer.
Select Hive Mind, Vulnerable and Weaken. Scourge is already a Defensive Skill, so it also benefits from Aspect of Alacrity during movement. A Rune-triggered Vortex can group enemies even though Vortex is not on your active Skill Bar.
1/15Ultimate/Burst: The Devourer turns an ordinary group into a dangerous Poison damage window. It attacks the battlefield while your swarms keep circling, and kills during its active period build Supremacy stacks from the Amulet. The Skill is especially satisfying when a large Elite pack has already been weakened by Scourge.
Choose Spew Putrefaction, Healing and Instant Kill. Activate The Devourer at the start of a difficult engagement so that you benefit from the full duration, then follow with Counterattack and Rushing Claw to spread Poison through the group.
Core Rotation
Start with Ravager and Toxic Skin when approaching an Elite pack. Use Rushing Claw to reach the group and gain Resolve, then cast Scourge to apply control and Vulnerable. Once enough Resolve is active, unleash Counterattack of the Swarm. The first few swarms begin Poisoning enemies immediately, while Ring of Writhing Moon adds its own swarms as you keep moving. Use Rushing Claw to follow the next group while your existing effects finish the last one.
For bosses, save The Devourer for a window when the target can take sustained damage, and keep Toxic Skin and Scourge active whenever possible. Counterattack recovery matters more here because there are fewer kills to provide quick clearing momentum. Keep walking to benefit from Alacrity and Protection of the Prime, but preserve a Rushing Claw charge when you expect a dangerous attack. If Counterattack is still recovering, maintain pressure with Poison effects and wait for a stronger next cast.
Miscellaneous
Paragon Board
Open on the Starting Board and select the Menagerist Glyph. The first goal is to strengthen the damage and utility of your Spiritborn Skills while collecting Dexterity and enough defensive nodes to make close-range fighting comfortable. Use Convergence second with Bane, supporting the heavy Poison damage that stays active after your swarms have passed through a pack.
Follow with Drive and the Fester Glyph. The build is moving almost constantly, so Drive contributes naturally to its endgame clearing rhythm. Add Bitter Medicine with Consumption for a stronger Poison package, then Prodigy's Tempo with Canny. Focus on efficient Rare Nodes, Dexterity and Maximum Life before spending a long path toward less useful secondary bonuses.
The Swarm of Storms Legendary Node is a useful alternative to investigate when rearranging late Paragon points around direct Pestilent Swarm scaling. Its Poison-swarm damage bonus makes it appealing, but the five-board route above keeps movement, defensive utility and reliable glyph access in balance. The Glyph thresholds and nearby attribute bonuses should be met with the surrounding nodes as you level them.
Spirit Hall
Use Jaguar as both the Primary and Secondary Spirit. This is important for Loyalty's Mantle, whose full effect only activates when both Spirit Hall choices match. Counterattack counts as a Jaguar Skill and also gains the Centipede tag from Counterattack of the Swarm. The double-Jaguar combination supplies a coherent offensive foundation while the Helm improves the cooldown and damage of the main attack.
Runes
Use Yul + Que to generate Offering from Skill casts that have a Cooldown and invoke Earthen Bulwark for an additional Barrier. As this build frequently activates Counterattack, Ravager, Scourge and other cooldown abilities, the pair fits its regular combat rhythm. The second pair, Moni + Kry, periodically invokes Vortex after movement and repeated skill use, pulling enemies into tighter packs for the orbiting swarms. Equip each pair in its own valid two-socket piece.
Talisman
Balazan's Bite is the preferred five-piece set. Its first bonus extends Poisoning effects and Weakens enemies, while the three-piece bonus strengthens Maximum Life and gives Poison damage a chance to heal you. With all five pieces equipped, non-Boss enemies heavily affected by Poison are periodically killed and release Scourge. These effects fit the entire build: spreading Poison while moving is already what you want to do.
Use Berú, Fer, Linta, Mlor and Phoba of Balazan's Bite. The sixth slot takes Protection of the Prime for additional Dodge Chance and Damage Reduction while moving. Favor Dexterity, useful Spiritborn Skill Ranks, Damage Over Time and defensive bonuses on your Charms. Maintain your resistance and Armor needs before investing every available slot into offense.
Mercenary
Hire Subo and choose Molotov, Scorched Earth, Explosive Charge and Thrillseeker. Molotov and Scorched Earth create a valuable damage-over-time opening, while Explosive Charge helps keep active Cooldowns moving when it detonates. Use Raheir as your Reinforcement with Bastion, triggered when you become Injured, for an additional safety net during crowded melee fights.
Final Thoughts
The Counterattack of the Swarm Spiritborn is at its best when a dungeon gives you a steady stream of enemies to chase. Ring of Writhing Moon turns each fresh swarm into moving Poison pressure, Rushing Claw makes short work of the space between packs, and the Jaguar-focused cooldown setup keeps the action brisk. Tough bosses still ask for careful charge management, but the build rewards that effort with fast clearing and a distinctive style of combat.
