Best Leveling Runewords
Project Diablo 2

Last Update: September 30, 2026

Introduction

Project Diablo 2 keeps the familiar rune system from Diablo 2 but expands it with new Runewords, additional compatible bases, socketable Quivers, and extensive balance changes to older recipes. This creates a very different leveling itemization path from Diablo 2 Resurrected, even though the underlying El-to-Zod rune progression remains familiar.

This guide covers some of the strongest and most practical Runewords for leveling through Normal and Nightmare in Project Diablo 2. The list includes options for casters, physical builds, Amazons, Assassins, Mercenaries, and characters that need inexpensive ways to improve Resistances, damage, sustain, or utility while progressing.

Most of these Runewords use inexpensive runes and become available between the end of Normal and early Nightmare. Several can remain useful for much longer when made in a strong base, while later options such as Echo, Loyalty, and Spirit can help bridge the gap toward more specialized midgame and endgame equipment.

Important: Runewords must be created in normal-quality socketed items (white or gray), with the exact required number of sockets. Insert the runes in the listed order.
Project Diablo 2 also allows Quivers to receive sockets and support their own Runewords, something that does not exist in Diablo 2 Resurrected.

Best Leveling Runewords

Ancient's Scripture

Tal + Ort

Required Level: 25
Base: 2-Socket Quiver
Best For: Bow and Crossbow leveling
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Excellent early defensive Quiver

Ancient's Scripture is one of the earliest Runewords that immediately shows how different gearing can be in Project Diablo 2. Instead of replacing your weapon or armor, it turns a socketed Quiver into a reliable source of survivability while simultaneously adding a small amount of Enhanced Damage.

The combination of Life, Lightning Resistance, and Poison Resistance is particularly useful near the end of Normal and during the transition into Nightmare. The Tal + Ort recipe is also extremely cheap and easy to assemble.

Ancient's Scripture
2-Socket Quivers
Tal • Ort
Required Level: 25
+[10-20]% Enhanced Damage
+20 to Life
Heal Stamina Plus 20%
Lightning Resist +[40-50]%
Poison Resist +[40-50]%
Best use: Choose Ancient's Scripture when Lightning and Poison Resistances are your main problem. Because the rune cost is tiny, there is little reason to wait for a perfect Quiver base while leveling.

Pattern

Tal + Ort + Tir

Required Level: 21
Base: 3-Socket Claw
Best For: Martial Arts and physical Assassin leveling
PD2 Status: Reworked Variant
Priority: High for Assassins

Pattern exists in Diablo 2 Resurrected as well, but the Project Diablo 2 version is fundamentally different. PD2 uses the original Tal + Ort + Tir sequence and replaces the D2R version's Cold Damage with Mana after each Kill and also increasing its Enhanced Damage range.

With Faster Block Rate, Attack Rating, several types of elemental damage, Attributes, Resistances, and up to 120% Enhanced Damage, it is an unusually complete weapon for such inexpensive runes.

Pattern
3-Socket Claws
Tal • Ort • Tir
Required Level: 21
+30% Faster Block Rate
+[80-120]% Enhanced Damage
10% Bonus to Attack Rating
Adds 12-32 Fire Damage
Adds 1-50 Lightning Damage
+75 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds
+6 to Strength
+6 to Dexterity
All Resistances +15
+2 to Mana After Each Kill
Best use: Make Pattern in a fast three-socket Claw and treat useful Assassin staffmods as a bonus. The recipe is cheap enough that waiting for a perfect base usually slows progression more than it helps.

Ancient's Foresight

Ral + Thul

Required Level: 25
Base: 2-Socket Quiver
Best For: Bow and Crossbow leveling
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Excellent early defensive Quiver

Ancient's Foresight is the natural counterpart to Ancient's Scripture. It keeps the modest Enhanced Damage bonus but shifts its utility toward Mana, Mana regeneration, Cold Resistance, and Fire Resistance.

This makes it especially attractive for skill-heavy Bow or Crossbow characters that are spending Mana constantly. Between Scripture and Foresight, you can choose the Quiver that fixes the Resistances your current equipment is missing.

Ancient's Foresight
2-Socket Quivers
Ral • Thul
Required Level: 25
+[10-20]% Enhanced Damage
+20 to Mana
Regenerate Mana 20%
Cold Resist +[40-50]%
Fire Resist +[40-50]%
Best use: Prefer Ancient's Foresight over Scripture when Fire and Cold Resistances are weak or when additional Mana sustain makes your leveling build noticeably smoother.

Neophyte

Thul + Tir

Required Level: 23
Base: 2-Socket Orb, Claw, Scepter, Club, or Staff
Best For: Early caster leveling
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: High for casters with a good base

Neophyte is one of the most useful PD2-exclusive caster Runewords because it can be created in several class-specific bases that naturally roll useful staffmods. A Sorceress Orb, Paladin Scepter, Assassin Claw, or Staff with the right skills can turn a pair of cheap runes into a surprisingly powerful leveling weapon.

Its main attraction is 30% Faster Cast Rate in one-handed bases or 40% in Staves. Physical Damage Reduction, Half Freeze Duration, Poison Length Reduction, and Mana after each Kill give it useful defensive and quality-of-life value as well.

Neophyte
2-Socket Orbs/Claws/Scepters/Clubs/Staves
Thul • Tir
Required Level: 23
+30% Faster Cast Rate (Non-Staves Only)
+40% Faster Cast Rate (Staves Only)
Adds 3-14 Cold Damage
Physical Damage Reduced by [2-4]
Half Freeze Duration
Poison Length Reduced by 25%
+2 to Mana After Each Kill
Best use: The base matters more than the runes. Check vendors and drops for useful +Skill staffmods, then add Neophyte once you have an appropriate two-socket base.

Purity

Amn + Eth + Thul

Required Level: 25
Base: 3-Socket Polearm, Spear, Staff, Bow, or Crossbow
Best For: Physical leveling and Mercenary support
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Strong if Prayer fits your setup

Purity is an unusually flexible early weapon built around a Level 10-12 Prayer Aura. It also provides 45% Increased Attack Speed, Enhanced Damage, Life Steal, reduced Target Defense, and strong bonuses against Demons.

It works particularly well on Mercenaries because they can supply the Prayer Aura without occupying your own weapon slot. If your character equips Purity directly, remember that Prayer continuously consumes Mana in PD2, so you should have enough regeneration to sustain it.

Purity
3-Socket Polearms/Spears/Staves/Bows/Crossbows
Amn • Eth • Thul
Required Level: 25
Level [10-12] Prayer Aura When Equipped
+45% Increased Attack Speed
+[110-145]% Enhanced Damage
-25% Target Defense
+[80-120]% Damage to Demons
+200 to Attack Rating against Demons
Curse Duration Reduced by 30%
Adds 3-14 Cold Damage
7% Life Stolen per Hit
Best use: Purity is especially convenient on a leveling Mercenary or on a physical character that can sustain Prayer's Mana cost. Prioritize a fast, practical base rather than waiting for an endgame-quality weapon.

Strength

Amn + Tir

Required Level: 25
Base: 2-Socket Melee or Throwing Weapon
Best For: Physical builds and boss killing
PD2 Status: Significantly Buffed
Priority: Strong cheap melee upgrade

Strength is a classic Runeword, but Project Diablo 2 makes it much more attractive during progression. Its Enhanced Damage has been increased from the original fixed 35% to 65-95%, and PD2 also allows the recipe to work in Throwing Weapons.

The familiar 25% Crushing Blow remains the main reason to use it against bosses, while Life Steal, Strength, Vitality, and Mana after each Kill make it much more comfortable for general leveling than its low rune cost suggests.

Strength
2-Socket Melee/Throwing Weapons
Amn • Tir
Required Level: 25
+[65-95]% Enhanced Damage
7% Life Stolen per Hit
25% Chance of Crushing Blow
+20 to Strength
+10 to Vitality
+2 to Mana After Each Kill
Best use: Strength is an excellent bridge weapon when your physical damage starts falling behind. Crushing Blow makes it particularly valuable against Normal Baal and early Nightmare bosses.

Rampage

Shael + El + Ith + Eth

Required Level: 29
Base: 4-Socket Polearm, Spear, or Staff
Best For: Fast two-handed physical leveling
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Situational but very fast

Rampage is a PD2-exclusive physical Runeword centered around one enormous leveling stat: 65% Increased Attack Speed. It combines that speed with up to 145% Enhanced Damage, Faster Hit Recovery, reduced Target Defense, and Fire Resistance.

The main drawback is the four-socket base requirement. You should not spend excessive time forcing Rampage into your progression, but if an appropriate Spear, Polearm, or Staff drops naturally, it can be a very smooth weapon for fast physical attacks.

Rampage
4-Socket Polearms/Spears/Staves
Shael • El • Ith • Eth
Required Level: 29
+65% Increased Attack Speed
+20% Faster Hit Recovery
+[120-145]% Enhanced Damage
+9 to Maximum Damage
-25% Target Defense
+50 to Attack Rating
Fire Resist +25%
+1 to Light Radius
Best use: Make Rampage when a useful four-socket base appears naturally. Its extreme Attack Speed is the main attraction, so choose a base and build that can take advantage of frequent physical attacks.

Echo

Sol + Dol

Required Level: 31
Base: 2-Socket Quiver
Best For: Bow and Crossbow progression
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Excellent early Nightmare Quiver

Echo is the more offensive follow-up to the two early Ancient Quiver Runewords. The Quiver version provides 20-30% Pierce Chance, Enhanced Damage, Attack Rating, Life regeneration, flat Physical Damage Reduction, and Life after each Kill.

PD2 also allows Echo to be created in two-socket Throwing Weapons, where the stat package changes to higher Enhanced Damage and +9 Minimum Damage. For Bow and Crossbow characters, however, the Quiver version is the more distinctive PD2-specific leveling upgrade.

Echo (Quiver)
2-Socket Quivers
Sol • Dol
Required Level: 31
+[20-30]% Pierce Chance
+[20-30]% Enhanced Damage
+50% Bonus to Attack Rating
Replenish Life +30
Physical Damage Reduced by 9
+2 to Life After Each Kill
Best use: Echo is a natural early-Nightmare upgrade for a Bow or Crossbow character already using Ancient's Scripture or Foresight. The Pierce roll is the most valuable offensive modifier.

Loyalty

Pul + Tir + Dol

Required Level: 45
Base: 3-Socket Bow or Spear
Best For: Amazon Bow and Spear progression
PD2 Status: Exclusive
Priority: Strong late-leveling option

Loyalty is the latest leveling-oriented PD2-exclusive Runeword worth including before the list starts drifting into true endgame gear. It is designed specifically around Amazon progression and combines +2 to Passive and Magic Skills, 60% Faster Cast Rate, high Enhanced Damage, and class-specific utility.

The Bow version gains Pierce and bonuses to Strafe, while the Spear version gains Crushing Blow and bonuses to Power Strike. The Pul rune makes Loyalty considerably more expensive than the earlier entries, so it is best viewed as a Nightmare-to-early-Hell transition item.

Loyalty
3-Socket Bows/Spears
Pul • Tir • Dol
Required Level: 45
+2 to Passive and Magic Skills (Amazon Only)
+60% Faster Cast Rate
+20% Chance to Pierce (Bows Only)
+20% Chance of Crushing Blow (Spears Only)
+[200-245]% Enhanced Damage
+75% Damage to Demons
+100 to Attack Rating against Demons
+[2-3] to Decoy (Amazon Only)
+[2-3] to Strafe (Bows Only) (Amazon Only)
+[2-3] to Power Strike (Spears Only) (Amazon Only)
+4 to Mana After Each Kill
Best use: Do not force Loyalty early. If a Pul rune appears during Nightmare progression, it becomes a very attractive Amazon weapon, especially in a strong Bow or Spear base with useful native class bonuses.

Spirit

Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn

Required Level: 25
Base: 4-Socket Sword, Staff, or Shield
Best For: Budget caster progression
PD2 Status: Reworked Classic
Priority: Still strong, but no longer dominant

Spirit is still a very good leveling Runeword in Project Diablo 2, but it is noticeably weaker than the D2R version. Swords and Shields provide only +1 to All Skills, Faster Hit Recovery is lower, and the Vitality and Mana rolls are reduced. This prevents Spirit from automatically invalidating most other early caster items.

The most interesting PD2 twist is the Staff version: it grants +2 to All Skills and, as of Season 13, 55% Faster Hit Recovery. That makes a good four-socket Staff with useful staffmods a legitimate two-handed caster option.

Spirit (Sword / Staff)
4-Socket Swords/Staves
Tal • Thul • Ort • Amn
Required Level: 25
+1 to All Skills (Sword)
+2 to All Skills (Staff)
+[25-35]% Faster Cast Rate
+25% Faster Hit Recovery (Sword)
+55% Faster Hit Recovery (Staff)
Adds 1-50 Lightning Damage
Adds 3-14 Cold Damage
+75 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds
7% Life Stolen per Hit
+[11-22] to Vitality
+[59-82] to Mana
+[3-8] Magic Absorb
Requirements -15%
Spirit (Shield)
4-Socket Shields
Tal • Thul • Ort • Amn
Required Level: 25
+1 to All Skills
+[25-35]% Faster Cast Rate
+25% Faster Hit Recovery
+250 Defense vs. Missile
+[11-22] to Vitality
+[59-82] to Mana
Cold Resist +35%
Lightning Resist +35%
Poison Resist +35%
+[3-8] Magic Absorb
Attacker Takes Damage of 24
Requirements -15%
Best use: Spirit is no longer an automatic best-in-slot budget item in PD2. Use it when the FCR, Mana, and +Skills solve real gearing problems; Staff Spirit is especially interesting when the base already has strong caster staffmods.

Where to Get the Runes and Bases

Normal Countess remains the easiest repeatable source of early runes. Many of the Runewords in this guide use Tir, Eth, Tal, Ral, Ort, and Thul, so a short Countess farming session can complete or nearly complete several recipes at once.

Rescue on Mount Arreat (Act V) is especially valuable because the quest rewards Tal, Ral, and Ort.
Tal + Ort immediately makes Ancient's Scripture, Tal + Ort + Tir is the PD2 Pattern recipe, and Ral leaves Ancient's Foresight only one Thul away.

Rune upgrading is more convenient in Project Diablo 2. Rune promotion recipes use a regular Key instead of gems. Useful early upgrades include 3 Tal + Key → Ral, 3 Ral + Key → Ort, 3 Ort + Key → Thul, 3 Thul + Key → Amn, 3 Amn + Key → Sol, 3 Sol + Key → Shael, and 3 Shael + Key → Dol. Runes can also be stacked in PD2, making it much easier to keep a useful leveling stockpile.

Socketed Quivers are an important leveling base in Project Diablo 2. Regular Quivers can receive sockets, and the standard socket recipe can roll 1-2 sockets on a Quiver. A two-socket base is all you need for Ancient's Scripture, Ancient's Foresight, or Echo.

For the higher entries, Nightmare Countess is the natural place to look for Sol, Shael, and Dol. Spirit itself remains cheap because Tal, Thul, Ort, and Amn are all low runes, while Rampage and Echo are still inexpensive by Nightmare standards.

Nightmare Hellforge becomes especially relevant if you want to make Loyalty, because its rune reward can range from Sol through Um, including Pul. Loyalty should not be treated as an early mandatory craft; its Pul cost is the reason it belongs at the end of the leveling list rather than beside the Normal-difficulty options.

Recommended Progression

Bow and Crossbow characters: Ancient's Scripture or Ancient's Foresight → Purity if you find a good three-socket weapon or want Prayer support → Echo at level 31. Bow Amazons can then consider Loyalty at level 45 when a Pul rune becomes available. Scripture is better for Lightning/Poison Resistance, while Foresight is better for Fire/Cold Resistance and Mana sustain.

Assassins: Pattern is an excellent physical leveling option for Martial Arts and other weapon-focused setups from level 21. Caster-oriented Assassin setups can instead consider Neophyte in a Claw with useful staffmods.

Casters: Neophyte is an excellent early target, while Spirit remains a strong follow-up at level 25. Sword and Shield Spirit provide +1 to All Skills, while the Staff version gets +2 Skills and 55% FHR. A good Neophyte base can therefore remain competitive even after Spirit becomes available.

General physical characters: Strength is an excellent cheap upgrade at level 25 thanks to PD2's much higher Enhanced Damage roll and Crushing Blow. Polearm, Spear, and Staff builds can then move into Rampage at level 29 when a good four-socket base is available.

Mercenary support: Purity is a strong leveling option because its Prayer Aura provides continuous healing. Insight remains excellent for Mana-hungry characters, while Purity offers an alternative low-cost aura setup focused more on sustain.

These are progression suggestions rather than mandatory steps. A strong rare, crafted item, well-rolled class base, or lucky unique can easily outperform one of these Runewords on a particular character, so use the options that best solve your current damage, Resistance, sustain, or utility needs.

Final Thoughts

Project Diablo 2 offers a wide selection of useful Runewords that can smooth out progression through Normal and Nightmare. Ancient's Scripture, Ancient's Foresight, Neophyte, Purity, Rampage, Echo, and Loyalty cover very different needs, ranging from Resistances and Mana sustain to attack speed, damage, Pierce, and Mercenary support.

Ancient's Scripture and Ancient's Foresight are particularly good examples of PD2's design philosophy: inexpensive, specialized items that let you solve specific Resistance and resource problems during progression. Pattern and Strength demonstrate the other side of the mod, where older Runewords can be rebalanced into much more attractive leveling choices.

The best choice will depend on your class, build, available bases, and the runes that drop during progression. Cheap Runewords are at their best when they solve an immediate gearing problem without slowing you down, so there is rarely a reason to wait for a perfect base before moving on.
