Borderlands 4 Items – Overview & Trading Guide
In Borderlands 4, items are at the core of character progression, build customization, and combat strategy. The game continues the franchise's legacy of loot-focused gameplay, offering an enormous variety of weapons, armor, and utility gear—each with randomized stats, effects, and rarities. Whether you're farming bosses, completing missions, or exploring new planets, acquiring powerful gear is essential to surviving and excelling in the chaos of Pandora and beyond.
Borderlands 4 Equipment System – Main Item Types
Players can equip their characters with items across multiple gear slots. Each slot serves a distinct function in combat and contributes to your overall power level and build synergy. Below are the primary equipable item categories in Borderlands 4:
- Weapons - Weapons are your primary source of damage. They are divided into several categories: Pistols, SMGs, Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, and Heavy Weapons
Each weapon features randomized stats, manufacturer bonuses, and unique perks like elemental damage, ammo regeneration, or alternate firing modes.
Legendary Weapons often come with game-changing effects and are highly sought after for endgame builds.
- Shields - Shields absorb incoming damage and act as your first line of defense: Standard, Absorption, Amp, Nova, and Roid types offer different bonuses.
Some shields boost your offense, like reflecting bullets or causing elemental explosions when broken.
Legendary Shields often include rare passives such as life-steal or area denial fields.
- Grenade Mods - Grenade Mods enhance your throwable explosives: Effects range from homing missiles to cloning grenades to status-effect bombs.
Certain grenades are capable of debuffing enemies, healing allies, or triggering skill synergies.
- Class Mods - These mods significantly alter your playstyle: Tailored to each class (Vault Hunter), they boost specific skills, stats, or action skill cooldowns.
High-end Class Mods can redefine how your character performs in combat.
- Relics / Artifacts - Artifacts provide passive, often build-defining bonuses: Examples include movement speed boosts, elemental damage multipliers, or ammo recovery.
Some artifacts interact with environmental or elemental effects, creating unique build opportunities.
- Cosmetics & Skins - Purely aesthetic items like: Character skins, weapon skins, heads, emotes, and echo themes.
These don’t affect gameplay but are popular for personalization and trading.
Trading Items in Borderlands 4
Borderlands 4 features a revamped trading system, allowing players to exchange gear with friends or co-op partners more efficiently than before.
Available Trading Methods:
- Direct Trade: Initiate a trade with nearby players to exchange items securely through a menu interface.
- Drop Trade: Manually drop gear in the world for another player to pick up (now includes item-locking to prevent sniping).
- Mail System: Send weapons, shields, or mods to friends via the in-game mail feature.
Trading is especially useful for sharing rare gear, completing specific builds, or recycling loot between alts. However, not all items are tradeable—story-locked gear, event-only items, and some legendary drops may be account-bound or have level restrictions.
