Spec Overview

Windwalker is one of the best melee specializations in World of Warcraft's Battle for Azeroth expansion and Patch 8.2. Monk is a jack of all trades and performs well in all three specializations, with its Windwalker spec performing exceptionally well with very high priority target damage in Raids and Dungeons. WW Monk utilizes swift one-handed weapons, offers very good AoE, unparalleled single-target burst, and terrific mobility.

 Pros  Cons
Easy rotation  Lack of defensive skills and cooldowns
Amazing mobility thanks to Roll, Flying Serpent Kick, and Tiger's Lust  Weak sustainable DPS which falls drastically in longer fights
Good self-healing  Heavily reliant on gear
One of the best single-target bursts and good AoE  Only one viable path for building your character

Statistics Priority

  1. Agility - primary stat for Windwalker Monk. It increases your melee attack power. Also, Agility gets converted to Dodge for classes that use Leather Armor
  1. Versatility - increases your damage, healing, and reduces damage taken. Another extremely important attribute for Monks
  1. Mastery - increases your damage from Combo Strikes, which increase your damage dealt with attacks if they aren't repeating your previous attack
  1. Haste - increases the rate at which you deal melee attacks and cast spells
  1. Critical Strike - increases your chance to Critically Strike and deal 200% of your base damage

The Best Talent Choices

Chi Burst
Level 15: Recommended choice - Chi Burst
Chi BurstChi Burst is the best talent choice for this Tier. It is an instant cast with medium cooldown which heals all allies and damage enemies in front of you. It also generates 1 Chi for each enemy hit (up to 2 Chi)
Earthen RageEye of the Tiger enhances Tiger PalmTiger Palm which is used mainly for Chi generation in this build, making it a redundant pick. On the other hand, Chi WaveChi Wave has a very similar effect to Chi Burst (dealing damage and healing allies) but it bounces randomly between targets. It's also a viable option, but much more popular during leveling and on lower tier content
Tiger's Lust
Level 30:
Recommended choice - Tiger's Lust
Tiger's LustTiger's Lust - is the only valid option for this tier. It breaks all snares and slows and gives your target a brief movement speed increase. Great in encounters where undisturbed kiting is required
CelerityCelerity enhances your RollRoll ability, by reducing its cooldown and increasing maximum charges. While it's ok for mobility, and usually has no uses in Raids and PvE. Chi TorpedoChi Torpedo replaces Roll and can launch your forward and increase your movement speed briefly. Again, it's a useful movement skill but has no team utility
Fist of the White Tiger
Level 45:
Recommended choice - Fist of the White Tiger
Fist of the White TigerFist of the White Tiger - which is the only viable choice for this tier. It is a great Chi generator and decent damage dealing ability with a low cooldown
Neither AscensionAscension or Energizing ElixirEnergizing Elixir is worth considering on this tier. Energizing Elixir restores your Energy but has a cooldown of one minute making it completely unreliable, while Ascension is not worth using in PvE. It's the recommended choice for PvP as it increases your maximum Chi, maximum Energy, and Energy regeneration. All this result in increases DPS and makes your gameplay much smoother when you need to close down the distance to your enemies
Ring of Peace
Level 60:
Recommended choice - Ring of Peace
Ring of PeaceRing of Peace - which is a great utility spell used to interrupt crowd control or save your allies in tougher encounters. It's the best choice for this tier in terms of team utility
Good KarmaGood Karma, on the other hand, is a quite useful defensive spell, which makes damage redirected by Touch of KarmaTouch of Karma also heal you. Tiger Tail SweepTiger Tail Sweep reduces the cooldown of Leg SweepLeg Sweep, which is a very powerful stun, but this makes the skill very situational and redundant on most occasions.
Diffuse Magic / Dampen Harm
Level 75:
Recommended choice - Diffuse Magic or Dampen Harm
Diffuse MagicDiffuse Magic and Dampen HarmDampen Harm are both extremely useful defensive cooldowns. Diffuse Magic protects you from magic damage, while Dampen Harm protects you from all types of damage but to a lower extent, and has a better effect against heavier attacks.
Inner StrengthInner Strength is also a defensive Talent, but in contrary to Diffuse Magic and Dampen Harm it's a passive skill. It reduces your damage taken by 2% every time you spend Chi, stacking up to 5 times for a total of 10% damage reduction. Being passive is nice but the mere 10% is unsuited for Raids and end-game content
Hit Combo
Level 90:
Recommended choice - Hit Combo
Hit Combo Hit Combo - is the best and the most well-rounded pick for this tier. It increases your overall DPS and helps with sustaining your damage, which is one of the biggest downsides of the Windwalker spec
Invoke Xuen, the White TigerInvoke Xuen, the White Tiger will be usually a preferred option for single-target DPS, while Rushing Jade WindRushing Jade Wind deals good AoE damage but can be only considered viable in certain PvP setups or when leveling
Whirling Dragon Punch
Level 100:
Recommended choice - Whirling Dragon Punch
Whirling Dragon PunchWhirling Dragon Punch - the most flexible Talents from this Tier. In terms of single-target DPS it is tied with Serenity, however, it is much more convenient to use and grants higher sustained damage
SerenitySerenity is also a viable pick, which grants very high damage burst when used by removing Chi cost of all skills, reducing their cooldown, and increasing your global damage and healing. However, it has a cooldown of 90 seconds, which makes the boost inconsistent. Spiritual FocusSpiritual Focus is a passive skill which reduces the cooldown of Spiritual FocusStorm, Earth, and Fire by 1 second for every 2 Chi spent

The Basic Rotation

Below you will find the basic rotation for the highest single-target DPS. Monks rotation is based on a priority system and depends on the type of encounter and how much damage per Chi can you dish out at that time

  1. Touch of Death should be always your first skill in every fight that will last over 8 seconds. At the end of its duration, it will deal 10% of the damage dealt to the target while the debuff was active
Touch of Death
  1. Fist of the White Tiger should be used when you are below 3 Chi and close to full energy. It's a great Chi generator. It's a Talent skill which has to be chosen to become available
Fist of the White Tiger
  1. Tiger Palm should be used if you are below 4 Chi. It also reduces the healing received by your target, making it an important trait versus Bosses and enemies that can heal themselves
Tiger Palm
  1. Whirling Dragon Punch Talent skill which is recommended at tier 7. It helps with damage sustain and can be used when both Fists of Fury and Rising Sun Kick are on cooldown
Whirling Dragon Punch
  1. Rising Sun Kick used mainly for different skill rotation and to allow using Whirling Dragon Punch
Rising Sun Kick
  1. Fists of Fury, which pummels all targets in front of you. Has better usage in multiple target rotation
Fists of Fury
  1. Chi Burst grants extra damage and healing. Should be used when below maximum Chi
Chi Burst
  1. Fist of the White Tiger - use again only if under 3 Chi
Fist of the White Tiger
  1. Blackout Kick which should be always used before Tiger Palm. Tiger Palm has a slight chance to make Blackout Kick cost no Chi, so there is a chance to overwrite the proc if you use Tiger Palm twice in succession
Blackout Kick ⇒ Tiger Palm

Tips and Tricks for Improving your Gameplay

  1. You must rotate your abilities for the full benefit of Mastery Combo StrikesMastery: Combo Strikes
  1. You have a chance to summon a Chi Sphere when you kill enemies with your Blackout KickBlackout Kick
  1. Always use Blackout KickBlackout Kick before Tiger PalmTiger Palm to not overwrite your potentially active proc
  1. Touch of DeathTouch of Death should be used as soon as possible and timed well with other DPS cooldowns for maximum burst DPS for its 8 seconds duration. This included summoning Invoke Xuen, The White TigerXuen, the White Tiger and Storm, Earth, and FireStorm, Earth, and Fire for the best effect
  1. Whirling Dragon PunchWhirling Dragon Punch, Fists of FuryFists of Fury, and Spinning Crane KickSpinning Crane Kick are your primary skills in AoE rotation. Remember to use Rising Sun Kick, Tiger Palm, and Blackout Kick when off-cooldown to build up Mark of the Crane stacks for maximum DPS of Spinning Crane Kick. It can be increased by up to 50%
  1. Chi is the Monks primary resource required to cast the most devastating abilities. It can be generated by Tiger PalmTiger Palm, Chi BurstChi Burst, and Fist of the White TigerFist of the White Tiger
