This version of the Grim Pillars Totem Oracle is designed primarily as an endgame build, intended for characters around level 60+ when the core mechanics and scaling truly come online. Spell Totems rapidly generate clusters of icy Pillars, which you then detonate using Entangle to unleash massive bursts of cold damage. Large monsters and bosses naturally trigger nearby Pillars while moving or attacking, creating a smooth clearing pattern even without manual detonations. Unlike the Archmage variant, this setup focuses on traditional cold scaling rather than mana stacking, resulting in a more consistent and accessible playstyle that doesn’t rely on extreme mana investment.

The build excels at controlling the battlefield through overlapping Pillars that freeze, chill, and zone enemies before detonating in devastating chains. Entangle acts as the central trigger, allowing you to blow up entire clusters at once for enormous burst windows. Because the build scales exceptionally well with skill levels, Cast Speed, and Extra Damage as Lightning or Cold upgrades primarily improve your crit reliability and the raw power of each detonation, while cast speed only affects how quickly you can trigger Entangle, making the build feel progressively smoother as you invest more into it.

For players seeking a higher ceiling, this build offers some of the most extreme scaling potential in the game. Endgame chase items such as Runeseeker’s Call (for massive bonuses from your runes), crit and elemental Heart of the Well or top‑tier belts like Headhunter and Mageblood can quadruple your damage output and dramatically increase your tempo. None of these items are required for the build to function, but each one pushes the performance into a completely different tier, turning already powerful detonations into screen‑shattering bursts capable of deleting bosses in seconds.

One of the biggest strengths of this setup is its smooth combo‑based gameplay: Totems continuously generate Pillars for you, while you stay focused on movement, dodging, and timing your Entangle detonations. This creates a safe but engaging loop where positioning and trigger discipline matter far more than maintaining a traditional cast rotation. The only real drawback is that Pillars can occasionally obstruct your movement or visibility, but with practice their placement becomes predictable and easy to manage. Whether you prefer a controlled, methodical approach or a fast, aggressive tempo, the Grim Pillars Totem Oracle remains a reliable, scalable, and highly rewarding endgame build.

1. Gameplay

It is a deliberate but explosive combo‑based playstyle. You place your Spell Totems to rapidly create clusters of Grim Pillars, then trigger massive bursts by detonating them with Entangle as you move between packs. Large monsters will often shatter nearby Pillars on their own, letting you clear naturally while focusing on positioning and timing your detonations. The build rewards good spacing, smart placement, and well‑timed triggers, creating a satisfying rhythm of setup and burst that feels powerful and controlled throughout endgame mapping. Set Spell Totem to use weapon set 1 and everything else on weapon set 2.

2. Build's PROS & CONS

PROS
  • Great clear
  • BIG single target damage
  • Safe totem playstyle
  • High damage uptime
CONS
  • Limited visual clarity
  • Pillars can block your movement

3. Leveling tips

This is an endgame build, and you are not meant to level with Grim Pillars from the start. Early progression is far smoother with proven leveling setups such as Twister, or simple spell combos like Entangle + Thunderstorm + Thrashing Vines, which carry you reliably through the campaign. As you accumulate enough Spirit and reach higher gem levels, you can transition into early totem setups like Spell Totem + Spark or Spell Totem + Bonestorm, both of which feel comfortable and require minimal investment. Once your character reaches the appropriate power level, typically around the early endgame, you can safely switch into the full Grim Pillars + Entangle configuration and begin scaling the build toward its true potential.

[DPS] Grim Pillars Totem setup
Tame Beast

Spell Totem - socketing Grim Pillars inside Spell Totem lets you bypass its Runic Ward cost, since it’s the Totem, not you, that casts the skill. This makes the entire setup far smoother and removes the need to manage Ward during combat. We support it with Urgent Totems III to dramatically speed up Totem placement, ensuring your Pillars appear quickly and consistently during every encounter.

Hulking Minions Grim Pillars - creates icy crystal structures that freeze, chill, and zone enemies before detonating for massive burst damage when triggered by Entangle. This is the build’s primary damage source, scaling exceptionally well with critical strike chance, critical strike damage, and extra damage as Cold or Lightning. We support it with Rakiata’s Flow for Cold scaling, Vorana’s Siege for multiplicative damage, and Cold Mastery for penetration and consistent endgame output, turning each detonation into a powerful nuke capable of deleting even the toughest enemies.

[DPS] Entangle setup
Tame Beast

Entangle - your detonation button - a fast trigger that blows up all nearby Pillars at once and delivers the build’s real burst damage. You use it constantly during mapping and bossing as soon as your Totems have spawned enough Pillars.

We support it with Branching Fissures II and Magnified Area II to widen the detonation zone, Morrigan’s Insight to consume Freeze for 50% more damage and trigger Nature’s Exchange for extra Guard and Cold Thorns, Rapid Casting II for a snappier trigger, and Efficiency II to keep the cost low. Together, these supports make Entangle fast, wide, and consistently impactful without bloating your rotation.

Rage Efficiency II

[Utility] Blasphemy curse setup
Wild Protector Blasphemy - turns your linked Curse into a permanent aura, letting you apply it automatically to all nearby enemies without manual casting. This keeps your debuff uptime perfect while you focus on movement, Totems, and detonations.

We support it with Ritualistic Curse and Magnified Area II to expand the aura radius so it consistently tags entire packs, and Heightened Curse to increase the Curse’s effectiveness. Together, these supports make Blasphemy a fully automated, wide‑coverage debuff engine that strengthens your defense without adding any extra actions to your rotation.

Romira's Requital Temporal Chains - applies a strong slow to enemies, reducing their action speed and giving you more time to position, dodge, and set up detonations
Muster Ritualistic Curse
Feeding Frenzy Heightened Curse
Rage Magnified Area II
[Utility] Purity of Ice setup
Tame Beast

Purity of Ice - grants a strong boost to your Cold Resistance and maximum Cold Resistance, giving you a reliable defensive layer against Cold hits and elemental DoTs.

We support it with Clarity II and Mysticism II to improve mana sustain and grant bonus Spell Damage while on full Energy Shield, and Cool Headed to cut Ignite duration on you for extra safety. Additionally Seraph’s Heart or Her Declaration if you want to layer extra defensive utility (90% res hit‑roll protection and Intimidate aura) into your persistent buffs. Together, these supports turn Purity of Ice into a compact but powerful defensive package that passively keeps you safer in all content.

[Utility] Elemental Conflux setup
Azmerian Wolf Elemental Conflux - we support Elemental Conflux with Fire Mastery, which increases the Conflux gem level by 1 for stronger elemental effects, and Compressed Duration II, which shortens the buff duration but speeds up the rotation between elements, giving you faster and more frequent Conflux cycles.
Muster Fire Mastery
Feeding Frenzy Compressed Duration II
[Utility] Convalescence setup
Spirit Vessel Convalescence - gives you an instant way to start Energy Shield Recharge and protects it from interruption for the full buff duration, making it a powerful defensive reset during tough encounters. We support it with Second Wind II to reduce its cooldown and make the skill available more often, Prolonged Duration II to extend the window of uninterrupted ES Recharge, and Cooldown Recovery II to further shorten the downtime between uses. Together, these supports turn Convalescence into a reliable emergency button that restores your ES quickly and consistently when you need it most.

6. Gear Setup

A strong Grim Pillars Totems Oracle setup begins with stacking Cast Speed, Gem Levels, and Critical Strike scaling, since these stats have the biggest impact on how quickly you detonate your Grim Pillars and how hard its detonations hit. Your Weapon and Amulet provide the largest offensive gains, while the rest of your gear fills in Extra Cold/Lightning, Spell Damage, crit multipliers, and any missing Cast Speed to keep your rotation smooth and responsive.

Defensively, this build is designed around Chaos Inoculation, heavy Energy Shield stacking, and high Intelligence. You want ES bases on every possible slot, with Intelligence rolls and global ES modifiers pushing your total pool as high as your budget allows. Since CI makes you immune to Chaos damage, your main concerns become Elemental Resistances and enough Spirit/Mana sustain to keep your auras and buffs active; rings, belt, and amulet usually handle these gaps while still contributing ES and attributes. With strong ES and CI, the build feels much safer in endgame content despite standing relatively close to enemies through Totem play.

Stat priorities on items:

  1. Cap Elemental Resistance
  2. Spirit
  3. ES
  4. Attributes
  5. Critital Hit Chance/Critical Bonus Damage
  6. Cast Speed
  7. Item Rarity
Cruel Hegemony(Weapon) Runeseeker's Call - by far the strongest weapon you can use for this build. The massive 200% increased effect of socketed Runes skyrockets your damage output, turning every offensive Rune into a multiplier rather than a small bonus. It is an expensive item, but the power spike it provides is enormous, instantly pushing the build into a much higher damage bracket and making all content feel noticeably faster and smoother.
Only Runes can be Socketed in this item
200% increased effect of Socketed Runes
Has 5 Augment Sockets (Hidden)
Tyranny's Grip(Weapon) Rare Wand - a well‑rolled rare wand is also a perfectly viable option for this build - not as absurdly strong as Runeseeker’s Call, but still capable of delivering very high damage if you hit the right combination of modifiers. Look for +Levels to Cold Spell Skills, Critical Strike Chance for Spells, Crit Multi, Cast Speed, and extra Cold/Lightning as added damage. A wand like this is significantly cheaper than the unique, and while it won’t reach the same ceiling, it still provides excellent DPS and keeps the build feeling smooth and responsive throughout progression.

Min. requirements:

50% increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells
Gain 15% of damage as Extra Cold Damage
Optional affixes:
Gain #% of damage as Extra Lightning Damage
+# Intelligence
#% increased Critical Spell Damage Bonus
#% increased Cast Speed

Sylvans Effigy(Helmet) Rare Helmet - straightforward but highly effective defensive piece, giving you the high Energy Shield and Resistances a CI‑based build absolutely needs. Its optional affixes are nice bonuses, but the real value comes from stacking as much raw ES and Intelligence as possible to push your survivability to a higher tier.
Min. requirements:
+300 Energy Shield
+40% total Elemental Resistances
Optional affixes:
#% increased Rarity of Items found
+# to Intelligence
#% increased Critical Hit Chance
Amulet (Amulet) Rare Amulet - look primarily for spirit and the Level of all Spell Skills, but it is also a potent source of Attributes, Rarity, or the usual defensive modifiers. Instil the Efficient Inscriptions
Min. requirements:
+15% increased Cast Speed
+2 to Level of all Spell Skills
+40 to Spirit
Optional affixes:
+# to Attributes
+#% total Elemental Resistance
Rare Ring(Ring) Rare Ring - use regular resistance Rings with Resistance, Cast Speed, Cold Damage, Rarity
Min. requirements:
+15% increased Cast Speed
+40% total Elemental Resistance
Optional affixes:
% increased Rarity of Items found
+# to Attributes
#% increased Cold Damage
Rare Ring(Ring) Dream Fragments - great utility ring that gives you extra Mana, strong Mana regeneration, and complete immunity to Chill and Freeze
(10—15)% increased maximum Mana
(30—50)% increased Mana Regeneration Rate
You cannot be Chilled or Frozen
Ingenuity(Belt) Rare Belt - you will need a lot of Resistances from this piece, while the remaining affixes are largely irrelevant
Min. requirements:
+50% total Elemental Resistance
Optional affixes:
+# maximum Mana
#% increased Charm Charges gained
Rare Helmet(Body Armour) Rare Armour - look for a high amount of Energy Shield and Spirit. You can also include Resistances and Intelligence.

Min. requirements:
+400 to Energy Shield
+30 Spirit
+40% total Elemental Resistance
Optional affixes:
+# to Intelligence

Gloves (Gloves) Rare Gloves - simply look for solid base defenses and tons of Resistances and Intelligence. Additionally you can lookout for Critical Damage Bonus and Rarity

Min. requirements:
+200 to Energy Shield
+40% total Elemental Resistance
Optional affixes:
% increased Rarity of Items found
+# to Intelligence
#% increased Critical Damage Bonus
Trampletoe(Boots) Rare Boots - your Boots should grant you tons of Movement Speed and Resistance. Use your Rune Slot for Rune of the Chase if you have enough Resistances.
Min. requirements:
30% increased Movement Speed
+120 to Energy Shield
+40% total Elemental Resistance
Optional affixes:
% increased Rarity of Items found
+# to Intelligence
Rare Jewel(Jewel) Rare Jewel - one of your main sources of critical modifiers in this build, and each one you socket should ideally carry two separate rolls of Critical Damage Bonus. Since you run many jewels, stacking these double‑crit rolls across all of them results in a massive, scalable boost to your overall DPS.

Min. requirements:
#% increased Critical Damage Bonus
#% increased Critical Spell Damage Bonus
Optional affixes:
#% increased Area of Effect
#% increased maximum Energy Shield
#% increased Cold Damage

Rare Jewel(Jewel) Heart of the Well - powerful jewel whose best rolls are always the ones that boost your Critical scaling and give Extra Cold and Lightning Damage, since both of these stats multiply your damage extremely efficiently. Any version that combines crit mods with extra elemental damage is a top‑tier pick.
Recommended modifiers:
Gain (9–15)% of Damage as Extra Cold Damage
Gain (9–15)% of Damage as Extra Lightning Damage
(4—8)% increased Critical Hit Chance
(6—12)% increased Critical Damage Bonus
