The Essence Drain Lich build focuses on stacking powerful Chaos DoT effects that wipe entire packs with a single kill. Essence Drain applies a high‑damage debuff, and Contagion spreads it across nearby enemies, chaining harder with each death. With Lich’s Rupture the Soul ascendancy, packs explode in rapid succession, giving some of the fastest screen‑wide clear in PoE2.
The core loop is simple and incredibly fluid: you tag enemies with Contagion, then cast Essence Drain on a weakened target to trigger the chain reaction. Each kill spreads the debuff further, ramping damage up to 4× base after several spreads. Against tougher enemies, you drop Dark Effigy totems and empower them with Sigil of Power, adding extra Chaos projectiles and massively boosting single‑target. The rotation barely requires aiming - one kill clears the whole screen.
Defensively, the build leans on a massive Energy Shield pool and the Lich’s unique Eternal Life mechanic, which makes your Life unable to change as long as ES is up. Thanks to Soulless Form and Atziri’s Disdain, a portion of incoming damage bypasses ES entirely, effectively discarding it and giving a pseudo‑mitigation layer. Temporal Chains aura slows enemies around you, making dodging easier, and the build’s natural range keeps you safe. Once geared, Lich becomes one of the tankiest Chaos casters in the game.
The build is extremely cheap to start - and that’s exactly why Essence Drain + Contagion Lich is one of the most popular league starters in the game. A simple +1 Chaos Spell wand or a small ES upgrade already gives a huge boost, and no expensive uniques are required. As you stack more Energy Shield and improve your links, the build naturally grows into a smooth, safe and reliable endgame mapper - all without needing a big budget.

1. Gameplay
The clear loop for Essence Drain + Contagion Lich is fast, simple and extremely consistent. You move through the map by first casting Contagion on a pack, then applying Essence Drain to a target inside that area. Once the marked enemy dies, the debuff spreads across the entire group, jumping from target to target in smooth waves. The result is a fluid, hands‑off rhythm: Contagion, Essence Drain, move forward - and watch screens melt without ever stopping.
For bosses, the rotation becomes slightly more deliberate. You set up Contagion, apply Essence Drain to stack your Chaos DoT, place Dark Effigy to add some damage to debuffed targets, and empower your setup with Sigil of Power for extra projectiles and stronger single‑target pressure. This combination of high base DoT, repeated spreads and empowered effigies gives the build reliable boss damage while you stay mobile and safe, maintaining the same effortless flow you use during mapping.

3. Leveling tips
Essence Drain is a very strong skill even during the Campaign, giving you smooth, reliable damage without needing any special gear. Early on you’ll use Chaos Bolt from your weapon to help your DoTs kill tougher enemies by applying Wither debuff.
Energy Shield isn’t worth investing into during the Campaign, since it needs good gear and proper scaling to feel safe. Instead, focus on maximum Life, capped resistances and damage passives to keep your progression smooth.

6. Gear Setup
The scaling options for your Damage are quite limited. You will need increases to your Chaos or Spell Damage, additional Chaos, Spell, or Projectile Gem Levels, and Cast Speed. A bit of Mana Regeneration might also be helpful if you can't sustain your costs comfortably. For defense, you will need to cap your Resistance and get as much Energy Shield as possible.
