Last Update: October 26, 2026
Introduction

Hero: Frostfire Gemma
Hero Trait: Frostbitten Heart (Gemma 2)
Main Skill: Chromatic Shot
Damage: Cold Spell Hits, Frostbite and Spell Tangles
Season: SS14 Tartarus
Chromatic Shot Gemma 2 fills the battlefield with cold projectiles that find their targets and keep attacking through Spell Tangles. Frostbitten Heart adds Cold Pulses and Frostbite, bringing both strong damage and welcome crowd control. Chromatic Shot can send several shots into the same enemy, giving it enough concentrated damage to tackle elites as well as densely packed maps.
The build begins to take shape at level 55, when Spell Tangle becomes available. The five-link becomes practical during early Netherrealm, with Manifold Entanglement making manual Tangle placement particularly effective through Timemark 5-7. Full Physical-to-Cold conversion and enough Skill Energy to run the links are the main requirements. By T8, its dedicated Condensed Cold (Noble) support takes care of conversion and makes Frostbite application reliable.
Gemma can build a sturdy Energy Shield pool while scaling Spell Damage, Projectile Speed and Focus Blessings. The combination rewards careful investment in a handful of key pieces: a strong pair of wands, well-supported Chromatic Shot, stable Tangle uptime and a defensive setup that survives long boss encounters.
Pros
- Strong map coverage from tracking Cold projectiles and Spell Tangles
- Frostbite, Freeze and Cold Pulses provide reliable crowd control
- Scales smoothly from crafted rares to powerful endgame equipment
- Can combine offensive Focus Blessings with Energy Shield recovery
Cons
- Needs complete Physical-to-Cold conversion for consistent damage
- Freeze is less dependable against powerful bosses

1. Frostbitten Heart Hero Traits and Memories
Frostbitten Heart automatically launches a Cold Pulse when Gemma deals Cold Damage. Cold Pulse inflicts Frostbite and grants additional Cold Damage for several seconds. The remaining traits extend Frostbite scaling and apply useful resistance pressure to bosses. Chromatic Shot's repeated hits keep these effects active across successive Tangles.

| Level | Hero Trait | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Trait | Frostbitten Heart | Triggers Cold Pulse when dealing Cold Damage; Frostbite and an additional Cold Damage buff follow its hits. |
| 45 | Deepfreeze | Increases Frostbite Effect and allows Frostbite Rating to exceed its ordinary upper limit. |
| 60 | Glacial Night | Applies Condensed Frost, making high Frostbite Rating more valuable in sustained fights. |
| 75 | Frigid Infusion | Cold Pulse lowers the target's Cold Resistance and gains a larger area. |
Deepfreeze is an immediate improvement as Gemma enters Netherrealm: enemies take stronger Frostbite effects, which help the Tangle setup slow and eventually Freeze targets. Glacial Night is valuable when fighting tougher enemies that survive long enough to accumulate Frostbite Rating.
At level 75, Frigid Infusion gives Cold Pulse an enemy Cold Resistance reduction. This applies more broadly than simply relying on Freeze, making it valuable for longer boss fights. Consistent Cold hits remain the key to maintaining the whole trait package.
2. Talents and Passive Tree
The 106-point talent setup uses Goddess of Knowledge, Prophet, Lich and Magister. It combines extra Tangle capacity, Cold Damage, Focus Blessings and an efficient support package.

| Talent Tree | Points | Main Talents and Priorities |
|---|---|---|
| Goddess of Knowledge | 28 | Peculiar Vibe (12) and Chilly (24). Take Tangle Damage, Tangle Duration, Projectile Speed and useful Spell Critical Strike nodes. |
| Prophet | 24 | Frostbitten (24). Obtain the Physical-to-Cold conversion nodes needed during progression, together with Cold Damage and Frostbite Effect. |
| Lich | 24 | Off The Beaten Track (24). Select Energy Shield, Sealed Mana Compensation, Cast Speed and efficient generic damage nodes. |
| Magister | 30 | Bunch (24). Focus Blessing generation, Spell Damage, Energy Shield recharge and critical scaling are the priorities. |
| Total | 106 | Cold projectile damage with Tangle scaling, Focus Blessings and a stable Energy Shield base. |
Goddess of Knowledge - Tangles and Focus Blessings
Peculiar Vibe lets Gemma attach an additional Tangle to enemies, increasing the opportunities for Chromatic Shot to connect. Its reduced Tangle Duration makes Cast Speed and duration nodes useful. At 24 points, Chilly improves Focus Blessing generation on hit and raises the maximum number of stacks.
Prophet - Cold Conversion and Frostbite
Frostbitten improves Frostbite Effect and allows Cold Damage hits to apply Frostbite. Chromatic Shot begins as a Physical Spell, so 100% Physical-to-Cold conversion is essential. Prophet's conversion nodes handle this during T7; the eventual Condensed Cold support provides the full conversion directly from the skill link.
Lich - Stronger Support Skills
Off The Beaten Track grants four levels to Support Skills and fixes their Mana Cost Multiplier at 95%. Gemma benefits from the extra levels across her developed Chromatic Shot links, while reduced support costs leave more flexibility for auras and utility spells. Use nearby Energy Shield and reservation nodes to strengthen the defensive package.
Magister - Focus Blessing Scaling
Bunch increases maximum Focus Blessing stacks and adds Spell Damage for every stack. With Chilly feeding the buff, Magister becomes a dependable source of sustained damage. The tree also offers Energy Shield recharge and Spell Critical Strike bonuses that suit the longer fights in T8.
3. Active Skills and Support Links
Chromatic Shot is cast as a Spell Tangle and releases three tracking projectiles that can strike the same enemy. Gemma places the Tangles on demand and maintains them near dangerous targets. This gives her time to move, refresh curses and use defensive skills while the attached Tangles continue casting. With full Physical-to-Cold conversion, every hit contributes to Frostbite and the Frostbitten Heart damage cycle.
[Main DPS] Chromatic Shot
The complete T1-T7 setup uses five ordinary supports. Spell Tangle turns the spell into a manually placed Tangle, and Tangle Surge grows stronger with each active Tangle. Manifold Entanglement instantly creates Tangles up to the character's current limit whenever the supported skill is used. The combination is useful for both clearing and establishing full damage on a boss.
Wind Projectiles improves damage and Projectile Speed, especially alongside Gale from Howling Wind. Target Projection applies Enhanced Mark on hit and grants additional damage against Marked targets. Against bosses with enough Frostbite Rating, Frostbloom is a useful fifth-slot alternative. It increases Critical Strike Rating once the target exceeds 100 Frostbite Rating and adds damage against Frozen enemies.
Spell Tangle and Manifold Entanglement both support manual use of Chromatic Shot. Aim the initial cast toward an elite or boss, allow the Tangles to attach, and replace them as their duration expires. Peculiar Vibe increases the number of Tangles that can attach to a target. More active Tangles also increase the damage gained from Tangle Surge.
| Stage | Support order for Chromatic Shot |
|---|---|
| Entering Netherrealm | Spell Tangle - Tangle Surge - Wind Projectiles - Projectile Penetration - Target Projection |
| Developed T1-T7 | Spell Tangle - Tangle Surge - Manifold Entanglement - Wind Projectiles - Target Projection |
| High-budget T8 | Spell Tangle - Tangle Surge - Chromatic Shot: Lightchaser (Magnificent) - Wind Projectiles - Chromatic Shot: Condensed Cold (Noble) |
Lightchaser (Magnificent) occupies the third support slot and improves the projectiles' tracking, Projectile Speed and main-attribute damage scaling. Condensed Cold (Noble) occupies slot five, converting all Physical Damage to Cold and strengthening Cold hits. Once Condensed Cold is active, the conversion points in Prophet can be reassigned to other useful Cold or defensive nodes.
[Movement and Positioning] Speed Phantom
Speed Phantom moves Gemma through enemies, pulls nearby targets with reversed Knockback and leaves Remnants that explode after a brief delay. Hitting enemies with the Remnants builds a short Spell Damage buff. The pull helps group packs before placing Chromatic Shot Tangles.
Blink remains a practical choice on maps where crossing walls and gaps matters more than controlling nearby enemies.
[Boss Curse] Biting Cold
Biting Cold increases the Cold Damage taken by cursed enemies. Cast it on elites and bosses before committing to a longer Tangle damage window. Deepened Curse adds another damage bonus once the curse has lasted for two seconds, making it especially useful in extended fights.
Terrain of Malice turns the curse into an instant, caster-centered area. It works well when Gemma can safely approach a boss; the basic targeted curse is also useful if a longer casting distance is preferable.
[Offensive Empower] Aim
Aim grants Euphoria, increasing Projectile Damage for Chromatic Shot. In Season 14 the buff applies to projectile spells as well as ranged projectile attacks. Its Cast Speed penalty makes timing important; cast it before a boss damage window, after the Tangles have attached.
Mass Effect raises the value of Empower charges, while Well-Fought Battle rewards repeated uses during long fights. Continue refreshing Aim manually when it expires.
[Defensive Skill] Frost Shield
Frost Shield reduces incoming Physical and Fire Damage for a short period and creates three Cold shields around Gemma. It is valuable when Tangles are already dealing damage and Gemma must survive an elite's attack sequence or a boss mechanic.
Use Frost Shield ahead of dangerous attacks. A larger Energy Shield pool and reliable recharge remain important against other damage types.
[Recovery] Compound Tonic
Compound Tonic provides a direct recovery button for difficult Netherrealm maps. It complements Gemma's Energy Shield recharge when repeated damage or dangerous ground effects interrupt normal recovery.
4. Passive Skills and Auras
Cold Damage and consistent defenses are the priorities for the T1-T7 aura setup. Offensive auras improve every Tangle-triggered Chromatic Shot, while Energy Shield and resistance passives can cover weaknesses in early Netherrealm gear. The total Sealed Mana must leave enough resources for casting the main skill and utility buffs.
[Main Cold Aura] Frigid Domain / Precise: Frigid Domain
Frigid Domain strengthens Cold Damage from Chromatic Shot and the Frostbitten Heart pulses. The Precise variant offers a later upgrade once the character can afford the extra investment.
Precise: Concentrated is a further option when no more than two auras affect Gemma. This condition matters when selecting the rest of the passive setup.
[Secondary Cold Passive] Ice Focus / Precise: Ice Focus
Ice Focus provides more Cold Damage and benefits from the Frostbite applied by Chromatic Shot. It is a convenient secondary offensive passive during T7 progression.
[Defensive Aura] Energy Fortress
Energy Fortress increases Gemma's Energy Shield and supports a safer playstyle against heavy hits. It can occupy the larger passive slot when T7 equipment still lacks sufficient survivability.
[Resistance Alternative] Elemental Resistance
Elemental Resistance is useful while completing the gear's elemental resistance rolls. It competes with other expensive auras for reservation and can be dropped after those defenses are covered by equipment.
5. Leveling and Recommended Progression
Frostbitten Heart develops naturally through the campaign, while the full Cold Tangle setup comes online in Netherrealm. The first priority is complete Physical-to-Cold conversion. Afterward, the largest improvements come from Tangle quantity, strong regular supports and reliable Frostbite against elites.
Campaign - Establish Cold Damage
Ice Lances or Frost Core can carry early acts while Gemma unlocks her first Frostbitten Heart traits. Prioritize Cold Damage, resistances and a comfortable movement skill. Chromatic Shot becomes attractive once full Physical-to-Cold conversion is available.
Level 55 - Begin Placing Tangles
Equip Spell Tangle in the first support slot of Chromatic Shot and begin using the skill to place Tangles on enemies. Pair it with Tangle Surge and develop Prophet's conversion nodes. Speed Phantom, Biting Cold and Aim round out the active setup as Skill Energy increases.
Timemark 1-4 - Finish Five Regular Supports
Use Spell Tangle, Tangle Surge, Wind Projectiles, Projectile Penetration and Target Projection. This gives useful damage and coverage with ordinary gems. Finish key Cold and Tangle nodes while upgrading the weapon base, Energy Shield and resistances.
Timemark 5-7 - Improve Manual Tangle Uptime
Introduce Manifold Entanglement in the third support slot to create the full available group of Tangles with each use. Place them directly on bosses and dangerous rares. Keep Biting Cold and Aim ready for longer fights, and use Frost Shield during dangerous attack sequences. Build toward reliable Focus Blessings and a good amount of Projectile Speed.
Timemark 8 - Specialized Cold Supports
Chromatic Shot: Lightchaser (Magnificent) replaces Manifold Entanglement in slot three. Chromatic Shot: Condensed Cold (Noble) replaces Target Projection in slot five and supplies the complete Cold conversion. Move freed conversion talent points into Cold Damage, Frostbite or defenses. The improved tracking and damage package rewards stronger wands and Hero Memories.
Profound - Finish Critical and Defensive Scaling
Improve Spell Critical Strike Rating, Focus Blessing stacks, Tangle capacity and Projectile Speed. High-quality wands, a stronger aura package and reliable Energy Shield recharge help Gemma remain effective during difficult boss mechanics. Refresh Tangles as their duration ends and maintain Biting Cold and Aim during important damage windows.
6. Gear Setup and Stat Priorities
Gemma can reach T7 with crafted rares, but Chromatic Shot becomes much more effective when the weapons, Cold conversion and projectile modifiers reinforce each other. The equipment below concentrates on Tangle performance, consistent Cold Hit Damage and a defensive Energy Shield core.
- Complete Physical-to-Cold conversion for Chromatic Shot
- Spell Skill Levels, Cold Damage and Tangle Damage
- Spell Critical Strike Rating before committing heavily to Critical Strike Damage
- Projectile Speed, especially with Gale from Howling Wind
- Tangle Quantity, Duration and reliable activation
- Focus Blessing stacks and appropriate Focus Blessing Effect
- Energy Shield, Elemental Resistances and ES recharge or regain
- Intelligence, Cast Speed and sufficient Skill Energy for developed links
Recommended Equipment

Weapons - Two Crafted Wands
Seek Spell Skill Levels, Cold or Spell Damage, flat added Cold Damage and useful Cast Speed. Two well-crafted rare wands are excellent for T7 and early T8. Later upgrades can focus on Tangle Damage Enhancement, Critical Strike Rating and premium skill affixes.
Headless Cleric wand bases become attractive with high-end crafting. Keep both weapons relevant to the main Spell Hit damage.

Helmet - Opening Heart / Malign Embrace
Opening Heart is an accessible bridge into critical scaling. Malign Embrace offers a more specialized Tangle direction for stronger equipment packages. Favor a high-value rare with Energy Shield and resistances if those defenses are still missing.
Inspect the Tangle-specific affixes and actual skill compatibility before moving to a premium helmet.

Body Armour - Crafted Energy Shield Chest
A well-crafted high-ES rare chest offers reliable protection while the four talent trees develop damage. Seek Energy Shield, Elemental Resistances and useful resource or defensive modifiers. Its flexibility makes it a practical long-term choice for frequent T8 mapping.
A specialty chest can take this slot when the rest of the character already has dependable resistances and recovery.

Necklace - Howling Wind / Rare Cold Amulet
Howling Wind provides Gale, allowing Projectile Speed bonuses to improve Projectile Damage. The interaction works nicely with Wind Projectiles and Lightchaser. A rare amulet can supply Cold Skill Levels, Intelligence, Energy Shield and resistances until the complete Projectile Speed package is ready.
Howling Wind becomes more valuable as Projectile Speed rises across wands, Memories and support gems.

Gloves - Crafted Rares / Wings of Light
Use crafted gloves for missing defenses, Critical Strike Rating, Cast Speed and Intelligence. Wings of Light can become a major offensive item once Gemma reliably Intimidates enemies affected by several crowd-control effects. Frostbite, Freeze, Blind and other effects help meet its scaling condition.
Wings of Light requires a source of Intimidated, such as the relevant Kismet or compatible equipment. The gloves do not supply that source themselves.

Belt - Arcanist Girdle / Pale Mist's Embrace
A strong Arcanist Girdle craft can provide flexible caster stats, Skill Levels or defensive rolls. Pale Mist's Embrace adds Skill Area and converts part of Skill Area scaling into Area Damage, making it appealing for broad map clears.
Choose the belt according to actual damage coverage, maximum Energy Shield and the reservation demands of the completed skill setup.

Rings - Heart of Magic / Crafted Rare
Heart of Magic is an endgame damage option, especially when Focus Blessings and spell scaling are already developed. A crafted rare ring provides an easier home for Energy Shield, Elemental Resistances, Intelligence and missing critical stats.
A single strong legendary ring plus a well-crafted defensive rare offers a practical balance for repeated mapping.

Boots - Crafted T1 Energy Shield Boots
Prioritize Movement Speed, Energy Shield, Elemental Resistances and attributes. Well-crafted boots can also contribute valuable offensive and defensive effects while allowing free movement between packs.
Higher-budget boots should improve both uptime and survivability during demanding encounters.
7. Hero Memories, Divinity Slates and Pactspirits
The developed character gains a great deal from effects that improve the damage of each Tangle-triggered Chromatic Shot. Projectile Speed, Tangle capacity and Focus Blessing strength are valuable alongside ordinary Cold Damage and critical statistics.
Look for Frostbitten Heart levels, Projectile Speed, Critical Strike Damage and Energy Shield. Intelligence and Cast Speed are useful bonuses when the rest of the equipment supports them.
Prioritize Cold Spell Damage, Tangle Damage, Projectile Speed, maximum Focus Blessing stacks and Spell Critical Strike Rating. Defensive slates can contribute Energy Shield, resistance and more reliable recovery.
Use companions that support Cold Damage, Spell Damage or survivability. Offensive Destinies that improve Aura Effect, Focus Blessings and suitable elemental damage can help complete the endgame setup.
Extra Tangle capacity, damage against Frostbitten targets and Cold Resistance reduction all improve the damage pattern. Intimidate can enable Wings of Light when supported by the right Kismet or equipment.
Balancing Tangles and Projectile Speed
Peculiar Vibe supports an extra Tangle on enemies, while Tangle Surge gains damage from active Tangles. Longer-lived Tangles improve sustained fights, but faster casts and consistent placement matter too. Projectile Speed improves tracking and can contribute substantial damage through Howling Wind's Gale effect.
Focus Blessings and Critical Strikes
Chilly generates Focus Blessings, and Bunch rewards every available stack with additional Spell Damage. The system becomes stronger as equipment expands maximum stacks and helps Gemma keep those buffs active. Spell Critical Strike Rating should be dependable before investing in expensive Critical Strike Damage Memories.
Energy Shield Recovery
Energy Shield recharge and regain keep the character comfortable during longer maps. The Magister tree has a node that can start Energy Shield charge when a Tangle casts a skill. Defensive rares and a reliable recovery skill round out the package when difficult enemies resist Freeze.
Final Thoughts
Chromatic Shot Gemma 2 offers fast Cold projectile clearing with strong control and a satisfying ranged spellcaster playstyle. Manually placed Spell Tangles keep firing as Gemma repositions, while Frostbitten Heart brings extra Cold Pulses and Frostbite. The built-in tracking and overlapping projectile hits allow the same skill to deal with ordinary packs and sturdy bosses.
Full Cold conversion, Manifold Entanglement and a reliable Energy Shield base support the early Netherrealm setup. With Condensed Cold, Lightchaser, Focus Blessings and well-crafted wands in place, Gemma has plenty of room to grow into tougher T8 and Profound encounters.
