Sacrifice Paladin Build Guide for PD2
The strongest Setup for the Sacrifice Paladin that utilises Holy Shock Aura to gain tons of Lightning Damage added to your Attacks!Holy Shock Sacrifice Paladin Build
Last Update: May 5, 2026
Introduction
The Sacrifice is one of the best Melee abilities in the game. Enemies slain by this Skill will explode on death, dealing heavy Physical Damage to all nearby targets, which massively boosts your Clear Speed. You can use Physical or Elemental damage types to scale this ability, but the Lightning approach is clearly dominant thanks to significantly higher average DPS balanced by massive Minimum and Maximum Damage disparity. Thanks to the Melee Splash mechanics, which now roll independently for each target, you can enjoy the huge maximum hit values without noticing the very small minimum damage traditional for this damage type, since you often only need to kill the weakest monster to obliterate the entire pack of enemies. You will still have plenty of Damage from other sources to even this out more.
The Holy Shock Aura deals Lightning Damage to nearby Enemies, but more importantly, it adds a lot of flat Lightning Damage to your Attacks. This amount is affected by synergies as well. The most important one is the Resist Lightning Aura. You can have only one Aura active at the same time, but it passively grants you the Maximum Lightning Resistance, which is very valuable for your survival.
Since you are relying on flat Elemental Damage added to your Attacks, the Sacrifice Levels are not that impactful on your DPS, since they only affect Physical Damage. You only need it to reach level 24 for the maximum AoE of the explosion and better Attack Rate, which can be done via gear. Your main goal is improving the levels of your Offensive Auras instead.
Another useful aspect of Sacrifice is that it costs Life instead of Mana. For this reason, you will need a strong source of Life Recovery, such as Dracul's Grasp Gloves for massive Life on Kill and Life Steal at the same time. Mana recovery is still somewhat useful for your mobility Skills, but it is not very important.
Recommended Breakpoints
The Phase Blade is the fastest weapon in the game, so you only need a bit of Attack Speed on your gear to reach maximum potential DPS.
- Increased Attack Speed (IAS): 24% (low budget) → 54% (high investments)
- Faster Hit Recovery (FHR): 48% (good enough for most content)
- Faster Block Rate (FBR): 86% (with Holy Shield)
It is a Melee Build, so good FHR and FBR are a must if you want to survive in end-game content.
Stat Allocation
- Strength: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Dexterity: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Vitality: Invest all
- Energy: Nothing
You may need some extra Dexterity to get your Block Chance and Attack Rate maxed out. All remaining Points should be allocated into Vitality.
Pros
- Great Clear Speed
- Very tanky
- Versatile
- Easy to scale
Cons
- Key Items may be expensive due to popularity
- Low Minimum Damage may be occasionally noticeable

Skill Trees

Your Damage comes from the Holy Shock Aura, and its 3 synergies: Resist Lightning, Salvation, and Blessed Aim. You will want to max those auras out first.
For the bare minimum, you only need 1 point in each Combat Skill you will be using in the end, but you should invest leftover points into Sacrifice until it reaches a total level 24 for maximum AoE. You should spend the rest of the points on Joust to significantly reduce its Cooldown. If you still don't have capped Block Chance, you should get extra levels of Holy Shield instead.
It is very easy to adjust the Build for the Fire or Cold Damage types by picking Holy Freeze or Holy Fire instead and maxing out their respective Resist Auras. Depending on the market, it might be cheaper to gear up, but the maximum potential in the best scenario is currently slightly lower.
Gear
The Lightning variant of the Rainbow Facet is insanely valuable for this Build, so you will try to avoid using Runewords and focus on Uniques only. Your Weapon of choice should be Azurewrath, although Lightsabre is also a decent choice. Both options net a similar DPS, but the Azurewrath offers better utility. For your Shield, you should pick the Alma Negra for improved mobility or the Skywarden for the +4 Aura levels.
The Body Armour is a defensive piece, although the Guardian Angel or Arkaine's Valor offers a bit of Damage too. The Shaftstop is the best choice if you struggle with incoming Physical Damage. For the Helmet, the choice is very narrow too: the Griffon's Eye offers a massive Damage boost, while the Kira's Guardian provides a bit more defense. The Dracul's Grasp Gloves are simply too strong to give up, and there are not many useful options otherwise. The same applies to the Thundergod's Vigor Belt.
For the Amulet, we recommend the Highlord's Wrath or Mara’s Kaleidoscope. The Raven Frost Ring is very useful if you have no other way to deal with being frozen. The Wisp Projector is the best choice, but any Ring that increases Skill levels is good enough. The Rare Boots is a good place to get your Poison Resistance and Duration sorted, but you can also pick War Travelers for the Magic Find.
Charms
You will need plenty of Skillers that improve your Offensive Auras, ideally with some Life or FHR. You can also use Large Charms that improve your Lightning Skill Damage. The Small Charms should provide Life and fill the remaining Resistances.
The 3 Unique Charms are obviously very good: Gheed's Fortune, Hellfire Torch, and Annihilus. You will want this combo for every Build in the game.
Mercenary
The best choice is the Defensive Act 2 Mercenary wielding the Stormspire to repeatedly trigger Static Field, which greatly lowers the Life and Lightning Resistance of affected monsters. The rest of the equipment should be focused on survivability to ensure your Mercenary is useful when it truly matters.
- Vampire Gaze or Andariel's Visage or Ferocity (Helmet)
- String of Ears or Nosferatu’s Coil (belt)
- Shaftstop or Innocence (Armour)
- Lava Gout's or Dracul Grasp (gloves)
- Rare Boots with Life, Movement Speed, and Resistance
Final Thoughts
The Sacrifice Skill is very versatile and powerful, making it one of the best choices for any Paladin out there. It is easy to get started and can easily carry you through the whole progression patch.
